The secretary of defense used to be called the secretary of war, they changed it for PR reasons right around the same time we changed the term propaganda to PR. I appreciate the honesty.

The term "politically correct" was born out of this. It describes the process in which bad things are made more palatable through renaming. Other examples include:

war profiteering -> military industrial complex
imperialism -> spreading democracy
person killed by police -> officer-involved shooting
schools experiencing de facto segregation -> inner-city schools
white neighborhoods -> affluent neighborhoods
