Frantz Fanon, born on this day in 1925, was a West Indian Pan-Africanist philosopher and Algerian revolutionary most known for his text The Wretched of the Earth.

Fanon was born to an affluent family on the Caribbean island of Martinique, then a French colony which is still under French control today. As a teenager, he was taught by communist anti-colonial thinker Aimé Césaire (1913 - 2008).

Fanon was exposed to much European racism during World War II. After France fell to the Nazis in 1940, a Nazi government was set up in Martinique by French collaborators, whom he describedas taking off their masks and behaving like "authentic racists".

Fighting for the Allied forces, Fanon also observed European women liberated by black soldiers preferring to dance with fascist Italian prisoners rather than fraternize with their liberators.

While completing a residency in psychiatry in France completing, Fanon wrote and published his first book, "Black Skin, White Masks" (1952), an analysis of the negative psychological effects of colonial subjugation upon black people.

Following the outbreak of the Algerian revolution in November 1954, Fanon joined the Front de Libération Nationale, a nationalist Algerian party. Working at a French hospital in Algeria, Fanon became responsible for treating the psychological distress of the French troops who carried out torture to suppress anti-colonial resistance, as well as their Algerian victims.

While organizing for Algerian independence in Ghana, Fanon was diagnosed with leukemia that would ultimately kill him. He spent the last year of his life writing his most famous work, "The Wretched of the Earth" (French: Les Damnés de la Terre). The text provides a psychiatric analysis of the dehumanizing effects of colonization and examines the possibilities of anti-colonial liberation

Following a trip to the Soviet Union to treat his leukemia, Fanon came to the U.S. in 1961 for further treatment in a visit arranged by the CIA. Fanon died in Bethesda, Maryland on December 6th, 1961 under the name of "Ibrahim Fanon", a Libyan nom de guerre he had assumed in order to enter a hospital after being wounded during a mission for the Algerian National Liberation Front.

"In the World through which I travel, I am endlessly creating myself."

I swear to God I installed Ubuntu because I was sick of Microsoft's shit and now none of my games work and I can't get a bootable USB stick with Windows on it because the tools require dependencies that are deprecated on Ubuntu 25. What the actual fuck.

if you have a Windows installer, maybe you can just dual boot on another partition

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 5 points 4 hours ago

None of your games work? Are you running them through Valve's Proton?

Did your nvidia driver installation go well, this is usually the hardest part. If you didn't install drivers I believe they're located in the drivers and hardware app.

It seems you'll need to add woeusb via ppa https://launchpad.net/~tomtomtom/+archive/ubuntu/woeusb since it's not in the default software sources.

I installed Nvidia drivers through the command line, seemed to go ok

Games are crashing after about ten and some won't even start.

Remain calm. saul-your-honor

Which games? Are you using Steam? NVIDIA? Radeon?

What USB tools are you talking about here?

[-] Wakmrow@hexbear.net 4 points 16 hours ago

Nvidia.

Ubuntu 25+

Woeusb and etcher

Do you want to try to get your games working, or are you resolved to go back to Windoze?

Are you using the command line/console to install woeusb and/or etcher? What is the output?

You can message me on Matrix if you want some faster feedback. I'll probably pass out in a couple hours though.

Yeah, I can ping you. Yeah, using the terminal. I'd prefer to use Linux but I'm not into solving a tech problem to put a Windows bootable iso on a thumb drive.

[-] Hermes@hexbear.net 4 points 15 hours ago

You might as well try a distro more setup for gaming if you are currently stuck on ubuntu, I think people like Bazzite and Nobara. You can check protondb to see which games are compatible with Linux in general, ubuntu isn't really meant for gaming.

Why is nobara better for gaming? Like why am I using the largest Linux os and somehow we don't maintain dependencies for anything after Ubuntu 23? Like why would I want to fuck with this? Pay me $100/hr to solve this. Not you in particular but this is shitty as hell.

Again this is to get a Windows ISO to a bootable USB drive. This is not an uncommon ask.

There are some packages and drivers required for games and steam to work correctly, distros focused on gaming will make sure that those packages are kept up to date and work with games on steam. Ubuntu is installed on a lot of non-desktop devices, and has more of a focus on stability for general purpose compute, thus the driver situation is worse. Ubuntu may be installed on the most devices, but it does not have the best support and is not a good choice for a desktop, and is an even worse choice for gaming.

Again this is to get a Windows ISO to a bootable USB drive. This is not an uncommon ask.

Lots of Linux users have a justified hatred of M$ and don't care about providing tech support for windoze. Besides, most people installing windows already have boot media from when they bought it.

Windows truly is the worst OS, besides all the others we've made.
