Fediverse
Welcome!
Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock... and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.
And now with ActivityPub, we are reshaping the web, and achieving much more with lots of freedom. So thank you all, and welcome ๐ค๐

There are currently ~5 sumo fans on the fediverse. My current contribution is doing brief writeups about daily matches, but I'm sure with new voices in the mix we could expand to discussions about whose jockstrap smells the worst (jk, they don't wear anything under their belts).

Thanks, tho @tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 's daily posts have been great bc they give me someone to comment to!
I've been checking out some of the May Gran Sumo. Matches are much quicker than I had pictured, and there's a lot more hitting. I'm just trying to learn who's who and some of the basic terminology, but it's pretty enjoyable. I like the sound when they first ram into each other! ๐
I remember being surprised by that as well. As long as it's open hand they're allowed to absolutely go to town on each other, so there's even the rare blow that knocks someone out. The sumo association has been criticized in the past for not having sufficient medical care in place for the sport, but it's run by old Japanese men so of course change is slow (although at least not non-existent).
It's easiest to start with the guys on top, but unfortunately both champions (yokozuna) are absent this tournament with injuries, along with one of the 2nd ranks (ลzeki), but fortunately the remaining ozeki named Kirishima is currently winning so make sure to track his progress in the last two days of the tourney (basho). Just yesterday he maintained his winning record by pulling off one of the most difficult throws with the tightest execution of it I've ever seen. He's one win ahead at 11-2 but there are 3 guys at 10 wins so it's not in the bag yet.
Otherwise I'd say to look out for matches involving either Ura or Tobizaru, who showcase a lot of unconventional techniques and move differently than anyone else these days. Ura especially has incredible flexibility and even this tournament has been able to dodge incoming strikes by bending his back further than should be reasonable. @sergio@piefed.social clipped a pic of it, and here's a link to the match from day 8 (actually against Tobizaru, coincidentally).

Also take a look at Yoshinofuji and Fujinokawa, both relative newcomers who kind of exploded onto the scene and have been putting up some highly energetic sumo. Here's their match from day 8
I've watched through Day 4 I think. I need to make sure I have more time to pay better attention, since it goes so quickly.
I do recognize Kirishima's name, as I saw his rank was different than the other people's.
One of the last matches I remember, the announcer said the one guy had one every one of the pair's previous matches, but then the other guy just blew him away, so that was a big surprise.
That back bend is crazy! Seeing how agile some of these guys are is amazing. I've seen a few people really get launched off the platform and one or 2 guys seemed to get hurt legs.
One of my big viewing accomplishments had been identifying the moves that Honda uses in the Street Fighter and seeing they are indeed real sumo things. ๐
Also really enjoying the cute anime-esque wraps some of the guys have. They are surprisingly cutsie in a way I wasn't expecting their outfits to be.
