Fediverse
Welcome!
Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock... and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.
And now with ActivityPub, we are reshaping the web, and achieving much more with lots of freedom. So thank you all, and welcome ๐ค๐

I try to show people some cool animals and some positive aspects of humanity. I like to think we have a lot of fun, get some good laughs, and learn a bit about animals and their care. And I always try to reply to everybody so you aren't just talk to yourself when you comment.
Would that be non-SuperbOwl related ?
I love talking animals / sharing animal photos, but so far haven't found any active, healthy communities for that.
I'll talk about other animals from time to time in Superbowl. We don't often get too many owls at our rescue since we're more suburban than our surrounding centers, so I have other birds and mammals I'll talk about. Also just general rehabbing or whatever else comes up. While I stay primarily in Superbowl, I'm always up for talking about other animals too.
I dont wander into ickplant's animal subs too often, since they seem to be more cute/funny and I'm more serious and educational, so I feel I'd be kind of a downer there.
I just got a rabies booster last week to try and get my antibodies up so I can work with more mammals, the series I got in the fall didn't do it for me. I'm also a little hesitant right not to be sharing too much from my work, as they got pretty ticked at some other volunteers running their mouths at a local police dept on social media recently, so they've been a little more serious about sharing non-preapproved things.
There have been a number of times I've thought about a more general rehab community to discuss other animals, but I don't know if I have the commitment to go as in depth with more species and I wouldn't want to half-ass it. I had been hoping to have had my shots from last fall actually work so I could have more experience with the mammals by now, but between that and being picked to train all the noobs (they just do squirrels) I haven't had time to really learn much new myself.
The !birding@lemmy.world is really good, and they've got some really fantastic posters lately. I can't recommend them enough.
Thanks, subscribed to birding!
And wow, WTH does it look like when rabies shots fail? oO
Anyway, thanks for the extensive explanation! And I feel you on the urge to create quality content and have serious discussions(!) You know, before Lemm.ee crashed, I contributed about half-a-dozen posts to SuberbOwl, but eventually got overwhelmed by the relentless landslide of all things owl-related, so reluctantly unsubscribed, eventually.
I would still love an all-purpose animals /c, tho. It's sad that so many such places pretty much crashed and burned, so to speak. ATM, the top two animal places appear to be about 'cute animals,' and 'animals with jobs'... almost the same thing in my mind. Pleasant, but lightweight.
Anyway, I'm working on a proposal for a group-project to rotate our posts amongst a short list of quality communities on life support. I've just now added !animals@lemmy.world to that list, and I'll tag you when I post my group proposal.
It's pretty uncommon to not get a successful response, but that's my luck. It stinks too if only for the fact the clinic doing the discounted shots is a 6 hour round trip. Each shot is typically $600-800 and not covered by insurance, but going out there gets them for $100 each, do on still saving a ton, but 6 hours for a >5 minute thing is still crazy from a time perspective.
Now I have to wait about a month to take another blood test to see if this did the trick. The people administering the shots were very surprised it didn't take for me and said to call them if this one doesn't do the trick. The test only tells you if you have <0.1, >0.1, or >0.5 units of detected antibodies, and I was >0.1, so no idea how close I was or not before this extra booster.
Most people are good for life once they reach the 0.5, but we still need to be tested every 2 years just to be safe. If we get bit, we can still get rabies, and need to get the post-bite shot series, and I hear we will still feel really sick, we just shouldn't have to worry about dying.
I subbed to /animals, and will try to remember to find some stuff to share there. I'm subbed to probably at least 200 rescues around the world to get my owl stuff, so I get tons of other cute and beautiful animals too. I've been liking the pangolins lately and all the baby woodpeckers of various species. Also a huge fan of vultures, and all the other birds of prey.
Keep me in the loop, I've seen some posts about people getting more collectively active to revive some idle communities and am all for it. I've been having a crappy year with some getting old type medical things and then all my prep for our open house next weekend, so I'm hoping I'll be having a more chill schedule again shortly so I can maybe lend you all a hand.
Huh! I guess you're kinda like ME, but... foof! (I daren't mention my own, advanced age)
Shit, I'm sorry to hear that. I know one thing-- we all love you, and your work.
Make a whatchamacallit, and you got my donation, brother...
It's thankfully so been relatively cheap and straightforward, just annoying and took a few months to get it figured all out. Honestly right now getting my new vision rx has been the most difficult thing. The other stuff has just been getting my shockingly severe sleep apnea squared away and when that didn't still help me stay awake through the day, I discovered I've got a forgive deficiency, so I just need to rub on some gloop. Now I've just got to actually let the stuff do its job and recharge me from a few months deficit.
You all keep me really happy here. I like getting to share all this stuff with everyone and you've all been very supportive and encouraging, and I wouldn't be doing a lot of what I am if not for Lemmy.
*&!@#!, sleep apnea can fluff right off!
Anyway, here's my little tribute to you, for now:
Umm, well you can find, it, I hope?
