For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Laapataa Ladies (2023), a comedy about two arranged brides in rural India who inadvertently swap places on a train, and the wacky antics that ensue from there, including some satire of Indian gender relations and the caste system. This is by far the best-known film to date of Indian feminist director Kiran Rao, and received excellent reviews, so let’s check it out.

Next is Kiss Me Deadly (1955), a noir-thriller about a man who picks up a female hitchhiker, only for the car to be ambushed and the woman tortured to death. The dude goes on a rampage of revenge as he seeks to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, which centers around a briefcase containing a nuclear bomb. Everyone seems to want to get that damn briefcase, so the protagonist joins in the action. Director is Robert Aldrich, who is best-known for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), though this is considered arguably his magnum opus, and one of the best noirs of the 50s.
