For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is The Place Beyond the Pines (2012), a mystery-thriller about a stuntman (Ryan Gosling) who uses his motorcycle-riding skills to rob people and thereby support his family. The cops start closing in, and things escalate from there. Director is Derek Cianfrance, who also made Blue Valentine (2010), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this one, so we’ll check it out.

After that is Three Outlaw Samurai (1964), an Edo-period chanbara film about a trio of ronin who team up with a band of shifty peasants in their rebellion against their former lord. Soon after this, their interests start to diverge, and infighting and backstabbing follows from there. Expect a lot of swordfights. Director is Hideo Gosha, who is otherwise best-known for Goyokin (1969), which we previously watched. This is considered one of his best films.
