For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Toni Erdmann (2016), a comedy about a prankster dad who reconnects with his adult daughter and starts bombarding her with dad jokes. He then takes things one step further by pretending to be her boss’s life counselor. Wackiness ensues from there. Dad Jokes: The Movie. This is considered one of the best German films of this millennium; it is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of director Maren Ade.

After that is Pariah (2011), an LGBT drama about a black lesbian teenager in Brooklyn who must come to terms with her budding attraction to other women as she navigates her highly homophobic social milieu. Her mom, especially, proves to be an obstacle toward her self-acceptance. It is the best-received film to date of director Dee Rees. Excellent reviews for this one, so let’s give it a whirl.
