For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Toni Erdmann (2016), a comedy about a prankster dad who reconnects with his adult daughter and starts bombarding her with dad jokes. He then takes things one step further by pretending to be her boss’s life counselor. Wackiness ensues from there. Dad Jokes: The Movie. This is considered one of the best German films of this millennium; it is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of director Maren Ade.

After that is Pariah (2011), an LGBT drama about a black lesbian teenager in Brooklyn who must come to terms with her budding attraction to other women as she navigates her highly homophobic social milieu. Her mom, especially, proves to be an obstacle toward her self-acceptance. It is the best-received film to date of director Dee Rees. Excellent reviews for this one, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is The Place Beyond the Pines (2012), a mystery-thriller about a stuntman (Ryan Gosling) who uses his motorcycle-riding skills to rob people and thereby support his family. The cops start closing in, and things escalate from there. Director is Derek Cianfrance, who also made Blue Valentine (2010), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this one, so we’ll check it out.

After that is Three Outlaw Samurai (1964), an Edo-period chanbara film about a trio of ronin who team up with a band of shifty peasants in their rebellion against their former lord. Soon after this, their interests start to diverge, and infighting and backstabbing follows from there. Expect a lot of swordfights. Director is Hideo Gosha, who is otherwise best-known for Goyokin (1969), which we previously watched. This is considered one of his best films.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind (1980), a Hong Kong action-thriller about a quartet of youths who plan a bombing for the hell of it, and then, upon seeing the chaos they have inflicted, feel emboldened to try even more audacious acts of terrorism. Will anyone stop these sickos? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Tsui Hark, the guy behind Green Snake (1993) and Peking Opera Blues (1986), both of which we previously watched. This is considered one of his best films.

After that is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), the big-budget adaptation of the ubiquitous fantasy tabletop RPG that asks, “what if we made a Marvel movie, but with D&D stuff?” Yes, expect a whole bunch of quips and other action-comedy silliness as a band of six adventurers, led by a bard (Chris Pine), raid a dungeon in search of a precious relic. The directors, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, previously made the thriller-comedy Game Night (2018), which we have not yet watched. This did receive good reviews, so we’ll give it a shot.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Inherit the Wind (1960), a fictionalized version of the Scopes Monkey Trial, in which a Tennessee teacher was indicted for teaching the theory of evolution to his students. A media circus follows as libs and chuds duke it out in the battleground of public opinion, in an allegory to McCarthyist witch hunts. Director is Stanley Kramer, who specialized in these kinds of morality plays, his best-known being Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967). Excellent reviews for this one, so let’s check it out.

Next is Estomago: A Gastronomic Story (2007), a Brazilian comedy about a penniless man who finds his life’s purpose in cooking and just keeps on making food to navigate social hierarchies, despite all the challenges in his way, including being thrown in prison. That won’t stop him, though, because he keeps cooking, even behind bars. Hilarity ensues. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Marcos Jorge, and one of the top-rated Brazilian films on Letterboxd.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re finally returning to the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 31 through 36 of the fourth part, Diamond Is Unbreakable. Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is Bubble Bath (1979), a surrealist Hungarian slice-of-life following a man on his wedding day who wants to call off the ceremony. He has various conversations with the eccentric personalities around him about the human condition as the world warps and transforms around him like a Picasso or Dali painting brought to life. Think of it as a 70s Eastern Bloc version of Waking Life (2001). It is the only feature film of director Gyorgy Kovasznai, and initially flopped, finding a cult audience only years after its release. Looks pretty cool; let’s check it out.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is 12th Fail (2023), an Indian drama about a guy from a poor rural village preparing for a fiercely competitive exam to join the Indian civil service. As the title suggests, he has already failed at academia numerous times, and so, cheating, subterfuge, and good old-fashioned hustling all ensue. Currently ranked #61 on IMDB’s Top 250; it is also one of the highest-rated Indian movies on Letterboxd. It is the best-known and best-regarded film to date of director Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

After that is Make Way for Tomorrow (1937), a family tearjerker about an old couple is who is forced to move in with their middle-aged children after their home is foreclosed. Their family does not appreciate the disruption they cause, and would rather they leave/ Don’t Be a Dick to Seniors: The Movie. Director is Leo McCarey, who is otherwise best-known for The Awful Truth (1937) and Going My Way (1944); this is arguably his magnum opus, being widely considered one of the best films of the 1930s. Currently ranked #242 on Letterboxd’s Top 250.

This lifestyle is disrupted when his sister moves in with him, and he starts going insane, because she knows him too well, apparently. Sounds like this is ripe for some psychoanalysis. director is Steve McQueen, who has popped up a few times already on Hextube: we have watched his films Hunger (2008), Mangrave (2020), and Lovers Rock (2020). Excellent reviews for this one, so let’s check it out.

After that is a prime piece of slop, Eega (2012), an Indian action-fantasy-comedy about a man who is murdered by an evil businessman and reincarnated as a housefly. He uses his newfound body to pursue revenge in increasingly absurd fashion. It has a bit of everything: action setpieces, musical numbers, romance, sci-fi, slapstick, and so on. Director is S.S. Rajamouli, the guy behind the similarly maximalist RRR (2022), which we previously watched.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Pearl (2022), the prequel to X (2022), which we watched last week. It tells the origin story of the eponymous deranged serial-killing old lady Pearl (played by Mia Goth), who grew up in a strict, religious, rural-Texan household with an abusive father. She gradually becomes more jokerfied as her living conditions push her to the edge and eventually kills a bunch of people. Most reviewers consider this to be better than X, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is Leonor Will Never Die (2022), a Philippine comedy about an aging lady who slips into a coma after a TV falls on her head, and finds herself transported into the world of schlocky 80s Philippine action movies. To escape her dream, she has to inhabit the lead role of her final, unfinished film, and thus become an action hero herself. Chicks are gonna rock. This is the only feature to date of director Martika Ramirez Escobar. We have never watched a Philippine movie on Hextube before; time to cross another country off the list.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is A Prophet (2009), a French prison drama about an illiterate Arab French man serving a six-year sentence; he arrives a fresh-faced ingenue, but soon toughens himself up as he navigates the politics of the rival gangs that surround him. Eventually, he rises to the top, but at what cost? God Damn France: The Movie. This is considered the magnum opus of director Jancques Audiard, who is otherwise best-known for the Western drama The Sisters Brothers (2018). One of the highest-rated French films of this millennium.

Next is Nowhere (1997), a surreal comedy about a group of LGBT youths in LA about to attend the wildest party of the year, and their bizarre, psychedelic, hypersaturated escapades along the way. Apparently, there’s an alien-abduction plot weaved in here, too. Director is Gregg Araki, who is otherwise known for Mysterious Skin (2004), which we have not watched. A lot of critical acclaim for this one -- “Clueless on Acid” is the recurring refrain in reviews – so let’s give it a whirl.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re finally returning to the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 25 through 30 of the fourth part, Diamond Is Unbreakable. Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is Frankenweenie (2012), Tim Burton’s stop-motion feature about a boy whose dog is hit by a car and dies. He uses the power of science to bring the pup back to life, but uh-oh, he’s a little bit “off” after his resurrection. The once-friendly canine becomes a little hellion, terrorizing family and friends alike. Has the dog become a monster, or is there still a good boy somewhere inside? I guess we’ll find out. For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Bridges of Madison County (1995), the much-acclaimed adaptation of Robert James Waller’s 1992 novel of the same name. Clint Eastwood goes to a rural Iowa farm and starts schmoozing Meryl Streep, who is already married. Drama ensues as their romance escalates. Pretty much the definition of Oscar bait, but hey, we’ve never watched any of Clint Eastwood’s filmography and this one has excellent reviews everywhere, so let’s check it out. Probably one of your mom’s favorite films.

After that is The Great Silence (1968), the magnum opus of the second-most-famous Spaghetti Western director, Sergio Corbucci, whose film Django (1966) we previously watched. In the chilly Western winter of 1898, a mute gunslinger defends a widow from a gang of sociopathic hitmen out to kill her, and the usual assortment of threats and gun duels follows from there. Dudes are gonna have to rock. Great reviews for this one, so we’ll give it a whirl.
