Immich is the best option I believe.
i currently use immich, and it is phenomenal. immich is self-hosted, though, so you will need to host it somewhere.
i like it more than google photos because of its search features. ai/ml (local) learning of your photos so you can search for generic stuff and get pictures for it - it has been super helpful for sharing pictures with others, and i can generate single-use or limited-permission links to the photos just like a pro service. after importing a whole bunch of photos and letting the ai/ml run, make sure to name the people it pulls from your photos for easy searches for them : D
I'll add it to the list of things to self-host one day!
The service I see recommended the most is Ente. I don't need such a service so you would have to check the features yourself

Immich and ente are the best alternatives in my opinion. PhotoPrism is another great one worth mentioning
I switched to Ente a while ago and it's been great. My wife and I can even share photos with each other by default. I don't know that it has as good of photo "magic" but you can still use the Google camera app to do it if you want.
My only complaint so far is that it doesn't sync photos as fast as Google Photos does.
Ente definitely looks like the first thing to try out as I've not got much of a self-hosting setup at the moment, thanks!

Self hosted immich and tailscale gets my vote, although ente photos is very good, I cannot get over the fact that it exports photos the same way as Google with separate JSONs for EXIF data which is incredibly annoying.
I've started using Ente and it seems pretty good. Reckon they just copied Google Photos to make it more compatible for importing/exporting?
I guess so, but the best way is to preserve the meta data within the image itself without having to mess about with python scripts to put it all back in.
Now if only immesh had full support for rclone.
I took homegallery. Single binary executable, reading excisting folder structure
Proton Drive has a new photo management feature. Their app can automatically save photos and you can create albums, etc.
It's a good start for them but I find it too clunky to use
