Didn't they start using cloudflare to protect against constant ddos attacks causing downtime? Out of both options, having downtime from external servers failing is less of a headache to the admins (they are volunteers, this is the most important factor) than having downtime from internal servers failing.

[-] Danitos@reddthat.com 7 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, it's far better to have a once in a year downtime together with the whole internet than getting a constant DDOS.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago

sh.itjust.works was down too. I just switched instances which is the point. It's not supposed to fail over, it just can't be taken down because there are more instances. I sure wish my client could auto fail over to one of my other accounts grab posts though.

Sh.itjust.works, unless it’s CloudFlare.

I sure wish my client could auto fail over to one of my other accounts grab posts though.

I mean, in theory, the folks admining .world could create their own fail-over. But hosting costs money and redundancy costs even more money and this continues to be - at its heart - a labor of love by a handful of charitable admins, not an enterprise level app looking to maximize uptime for revenue.

To get Fediverse to switch instances or substitute a working mirror, you'd have to pivot away from the inherently decentralized nature of the application. At a minimum, you'd need an endpoint that worked as a switch between communities.

Like, its possible, in the same way Torrents have a single entry point that ties out to a semi-unreliable cluster of hosters. But it is not (to my knowledge) how Fediverse is currently designed.

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 0 points 2 weeks ago

I never tried it so i don't know: i can just login on another instance with my account made on the instance that is down?

[-] bisby@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

No, but the fediverse doesn't go down just because one instance is down.

You would need multiple accounts (one per instance), but you could just switch instances if you had that set up

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

It does when the majority of communities are on one server. This one included.

[-] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 weeks ago

My brother in christ, you chose the instance.

[-] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

.world is just the shitty flophouse I'm squatting in until I find (maybe build?) my forever home.

[-] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I’m a non-tech fl0pper. So what’s wrong with .world?

[-] MathematicalMagpie@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's too popular, and having too many communities and users on one instance creates a problem when things like Cloudflare going down happens.

[-] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Totally get it. I forget which site led me to Lemmy but the first instance I joined was .ml and from there I moved to .world

[-] AtariDump@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

When you call out a user on some bullshit the mods get butthurt that you’re singling them out.

Your idiotic disclaimer that you can use your messages for AI or using a “b” with a weird line on it isn’t going to do jack squat.

Edit: Plus they block the piracy sub-whatevers.

[-] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I think I’ve seen the character you’re describing. I think my take away from this thread is I need to deepen my understanding here and broaden my experience.

[-] mlg@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

That's why it's called "federated" and nont "decentralized"

Freenet/Hyphanet is I think too slow for modern internet users. P2P networks have always struggled with solving the service lookup and access problem.

Even advancements like DHTs or cheat methods like trackers will still only get you so far compared to plain old client server DNS.

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Bruh.

While a traditional social networking service will host all its content on servers managed by the owner of the website, the decentralized structure of the Fediverse allows any individual or organization to host a social platform using their own servers…. [Source]

(Emphasis mine)

[-] mlg@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Oh lol, guess they inflated its capabilities ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Federation by its very nature is the very definition of decentralized. My best guess is that you’re conflating high availability (e.g. fail over servers, or round robin, or something else where when one server goes down, another kicks in as a backup but still on the same domain) with federation.

~No shade btw.~

[-] Uri@infosec.pub 2 points 2 weeks ago

People made decentralized Lemmy kinda centralized

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Its their instance, let them ruin it in whichever way they prefer. Dont like it? Block it.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

That's why I blocked sh.itjust.wor*)^%#(NO_CARRIER

[-] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Underrated joke.

[-] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I like the centralized and understandable moderation of this larger space.

The smaller communities are basically little fiefdoms where you can follow the rules, but if the mods still don't like you, then you get banned with no appeal process.

[-] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

That's not how fediverse decentration works. =P

[-] Outdated4134@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

I've got eight accounts now on different homes and four at least weren't working

[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

All three instances im on are CF backed, you can guess how that went.

[-] ViperActual@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

This is why you can spin up your own personal lemmy instance as a backup to use if your main goes down.

[-] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 weeks ago

Y'all a bunch of babies. Just block the instance or make your own if you care so much

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 weeks ago

I think the implication is that .world runs through cloudflare, which went down this morning and took out .world with it.

Also fuck you we can soapbox as much as we want, get fucked idiot

[-] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Agreed, you're free to soapbox and call me an idiot, and I'm free to call y'all babies

[-] luciferofastora@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

This is the most wholesome insult culture I've seen

[-] ZoopZeZoop@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago
[-] naticus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm just happy to be here!

Well, we're glad to have you with us!

[-] MourningDove@lemmy.zip -1 points 2 weeks ago

I can’t imagine ever getting so upset about someone else’s opinion on lemmy instances that I would resort to soaking down to them in such a way. Either you’ve the perfect life or some serious anger issues.
