what-the-hell starting to feel like all this plastic business might not be good for the long term health of the planet

The planet is fine, it will be fine long after we are gone.

It is our civilization is seems to be fucked.

Sure but I'm including the biosphere as a part of the planet. Rocks are cool and all but life is much cooler imo

Yeah. There'll probably be a long period before plastic can be biodegraded, like it happened for wool/cellulose in pre-historic periods.

At some point, a mushroom will learn how to use it efficiently and then it will all be degraded.

We will be long gone by then.

You know what, I thought the average would be higher, I feel a bit better. Not much though.

At more or less they explain why this claim is not true: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct5tqj

The original study claims 0.1-5g/week of plastic dependent on the diet. The BBC expert says they overestimate this range a lot due to their methodology.

Well that's a bit more encouraging, although as they say at the end the real question is how many small particles we consume that can get into the blood stream instead of passing through the system.

Thats not too shabby! Credit cards are like 5 grams of plastic

[-] jwt@programming.dev 1 points 3 months ago

I was thrown off by the word 'consume' in combination with credit card. 'Ingest' would have been a better choice of words in this context imo.
