A burger place near us had a 'cook your own burger kit' for $25- 5 burgers, buns, fries, etc. It was free on doordash. The first time it happened i called the restaurant to try to pay. They didn't care. We spent 3 months eating a shitload of burgers.
So, I vaguely remember a podcast talking about this. Maybe Reply All? But anyway, they will move into a market and pay the costs to establish a footing or something. A similar thing happened to a pizza shop and they were subsidizing it so much that the owners realized and took advantage.
Edit, I believe this is what I was remembering: https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-52724062
In civilized countries that's called dumping, and it's a crime.
