Eeeeh... Not really. Remember licensing guarantees the right to fork. Many developers are not from the US and I would bet that both Asia and Europe (and probably other continents too) have the know how to manage a fork.

Get out of here!

(Edit: Yes, of course. It's Linux.)

Yes, it's a touchscreen.

Great! My advice is you politely comment on it with your own experience or your insight into what the correct behaviour should be. This will not only give devs a measure of the importance of this bug, but will also keep you in the loop of the process of its resolution.

[-] Bro666@lemmy.kde.social 12 points 5 months ago

This is PR bullshit. They have not changed their license one iota from what it was 2 days ago and, ultimately, the license is what goes. They have not corrected course. All they have done is asked users to trust them in a blog post. The problem with that is that blog posts are not legally binding and, in a field full of nasty, predatory and untrustworthy firms, Adobe is one of the nastiest, most predatory and least trustworthy . You do with that what you will.

[-] Bro666@lemmy.kde.social 10 points 5 months ago

Don't take this the wrong way. While I appreciate the tact with which you have expressed your criticisms, but you may find that your objections all boil down to "I am used to a certain set of tools and now I have to change. The new tools do things differently and I am confused and it is messing with my productivity", that is, the problem is not entirely with the new software, but with you, your workflow and your muscle memory.

Edit: Video proving that what you are saying is not correct:

I think that what you are calling "KDE" may be "Plasma", since you are comparing with another desktop environment.

To answer your question, yes, and the process started some years ago. It sounds like you may be a bit out of the loop, as Plasma now weighs more or less the same as XFCE, or thereabouts (these things are harder to measure than one may assume). I personally installed Plasma 6 on a Dell XPS PP25L from 2008 and it works flawlessly.

Are you sure you were not seeing only notifications from your phone mirrored onto your desktop and not actual downloads? Bear in mind that is one of KDE Connect's features, showing notifications on the desktop of stuff happening on the phone. It doesn't mean that what the notification is telling you is happening on the desktop.

Not malicious. Just buggy -- a downright nasty bug, but a bug.

A user has had a bad experience installing a global theme on Plasma and lost personal data.

Global themes do not only change the look of Plasma, but also the behavior. To do this they run code, and this code can be faulty, as in the case mentioned above. The same goes for widgets and plasmoids.

We are calling on the community to help us locate and quarantine defective software by using the "Report" buttons available on each item in the KDE Store.

Please see this linked image to locate them.

Meanwhile, KDE is taking measures to properly warn users before each download and we are also putting in place ways of auditing and curating what is uploaded to the KDE store.

Nevertheless, this will take time and resources. We recommend all users to be careful when installing and running software not provided directly by KDE or your distros.

And remember to report any faulty products you find!

.0 versions can contain bugs not found in the pre-launch versions. You can help us get them removed by reporting them. And look out for updates to Plasma, as they will come with many fixes over the next few weeks!

As for the themes and widgets created by third parties, we have already publicly advised developers to port their stuff. We have two pages available to guide them, one for themes, one for widgets.

If you, the user, discover your favourite theme or widget is failing, please look for it in the KDE Store and notify the author, as KDE has no control or leverage over third party developers.

Thank you

They are sponsors, so they support KDE financially. They also donate a % from each laptop sale to KDE. KDE devs work closely with Slimbook to make sure all software integrates well with the hardware.

David, Nate, Josh, Marco, Carl, and Niccolò are here ready to answer all your questions on Plasma (all versions), Gear, Frameworks, Wayland (and how it affects KDE's software), and everything in between.

Fire away, Lemmy!

We were expecting to be done in an hour and we have past the 2-hour mark already! Time flies when you are having fun.

Thank you for all the questions and the welcoming and friendly atmosphere, but the devs must get back to making Plasma 6 great.

Please keep the conversation going and KDE contributors will continue to answer over the next days as time permits.

Thank you all!!

you cannot install multiple DEs without breaking stuff.

You definitely can. There is no problem on having, say, Plasma, GNOME. XFCE, and so on on the same machine, even on the same partition and switching from one to another from the login menu.

[it is not a good idea to have] different versions of the same DE

This, however, is absolutely correct. The overlapping different versions of libraries and other common software would make things very messy indeed.

5 came out... TEN YEARS AGO. I would not call that break neck speed that would give you update whiplash.
