Thank you! 100% agree.

Now, apparently "decimate" has been being misused this way since the 1600s so some argue that means "decimate = nearly annihilate" is valid. No, it means people have been being wrong about the meaning of this word for 400 years.

*people can construct, not you specifically. But maybe you, I don't know.

Are you going to read or think about the comment or are we done here?

I misread "shame" as "shank" and it works even better

You can construct a trolley problem to justify anything you want. It's about the constraints that the person who posed the question chose. You don't really get to choose in a trolley problem. The constraints choose for you. In the real world, our options are not so constrained and the outcomes are not so clear. As such it is useless for actually figuring out what to do.

The trolley problem is a useful basic philosophical experiment to get people to think about things and reflect on constraints, assumptions, and values. And often the best response is in fact "fuck these constraints and assumptions!"

So the trolley problem is not bullshit, but it is very very often misapplied in a bullshit or bad faith way, for example last year in the US I saw a lot of liberals uncritically and unironically appeal to "the trolley problem" to rationalize voting for the party that was committing a live-streamed Holocaust. They were using it to absolve themselves of the responsibility to think about and own their moral judgements, and that is the sort of misuse that a lot of people balk at.

Proposal 1: Great idea. 2: Thank you for the tips! Especially the amount of time to reserve. 3. I also find it can be difficult to follow both chat and the movie at times, but I really do not like the idea of Audio Descriptions or auto-generated dubs that cannot be opted out of. I've basically accepted that part of watching things in this way means I will miss some details. Once PeerTube supports multiple audio tracks so that people can opt in or out of ADs I'm all for it

I zoom in, screenshot the cool emotes when people use them, and then I can just post them as responses for free

I open discord.

Some popup gets in my way.

I look for the x and close it.

I go check messages.

I close discord.

This has been going on for years. I still don't know what "Nitro" is. Other than forums, my understanding of Discord and usage of it is basically the same as it was in like 2015 or 16 when I had to quit using Skype and switch to Discord because Skype finally broke the tricks I was using to block its in-app ads.

Looks so cool, but I have to miss today. Have fun!

That sounds horrible. I'm sorry you're suffering and I'm sorry these people who were supposed to be helping abused you instead

Sacco and Vanzetti are right there

Bernard "separate but equal" Sanders

I remember thinking "damn I really want this poster but I'm unemployed and should be responsible with my money, I'll pass" and then being sad when Bernard got ratfucked in the primary and sad that I didn't have the poster.

Then he went on to be extremely disappointing and I no longer yearned for the poster.

Protests aren't about sending a message to the government. The government doesn't give a shit and will not listen. Protests are about sending a message to the people, about signaling what should be accepted and what should not. Protests are about spreading an idea, about leading by example, about signalling to others "hey, you're not alone in your discontent!"

I think the very word "protest" is wrong. They aren't protests. They're demonstrations.

The anti-ICE demonstrations will not convince an evil government to stop abducting people. But they do send the message to everyone else that we don't have to and in fact should not let ICE abduct our neighbors. The anti-genocide demonstrations were never going to stop genocidal western governments from helping Israel slaughter civilians, but they did help spread a message around the world that people need to do something to try to stop it.

I feel like I should have known this already.

Description: A collaboration between Soviet Soyuzmultfilm and Japanese Enoki Films, this movie features some adorable penguins as they grow up in the beautiful and harsh Antarctic and come up against the dangers of Man.

Content Warnings: We will be watching the sanitized English version because it is cuter, at the cost of cutting down on some of the blood and death. A discerning eye will still be able to read between the lines and notice:

  • Predation, death of animals offscreen

  • Disappearance of a main character with no explanation at all, which I will cover.

Other disturbing content:

  • Child abduction via poaching.
  • parents grieving the deaths of unborn children
  • 80's level of gender roles

Aiming for 5PM Central US Time
