don’t understand the benefit in doing this.

FSB wants backdoor in kernel. FSB notices subsystem maintainer is Russian, lives in Chelyabinsk. Can close eyes to backdoor, can pretend to review. FSB in Moscow make call to FSB in Chelyabinsk telling to buy heavy wrench at hardware store.

The only reasonable way to avoid backdoors is to meticulously check the submitted code.

Which is the job of maintainers. Which now aren't Russian, any more. To the best of my knowledge the kernel is still accepting code from Russian citizens, ultimately not having Russians in maintainer roles isn't going to stop the FSB from infiltrating the kernel but it certainly does make it harder.

This also isn't in any way a judgement on the removed people, it's just that it so happens that if you're a Russian citizen you're quite vulnerable to wrench attacks. You could even say that the kernel org is protecting them from being used like that.

They aren't, newsweek is calling it encryption because they're writing for normies. The leaked data includes bcrypt'ed passwords, so hash and per-password salt. Their choice of hashing function is not what you want to criticise the IA for.

Jet fuel indeed doesn't burn hot enough to melt steel. Forging temperature, OTOH, no issue.

Help them remove the stigma around their bodies and sex, and empower them to speak and be heard when something they don’t like happens.

This. So much this. If auntie wants to give them a kiss and they don't want to get slobbered then tough fucking luck auntie, I'll back the little shits up when they bite you. Predators are, by and large, able to do what they do because people don't teach kids that they do, in fact, have bodily autonomy.

And while I'm at it bodily autonomy of kids also implies that parents don't parade photos around like some fucking trophy or something. Have some basic fucking regard for your own kids and what they want. How would you feel when they're showing nude pictures of you to their classmates yeah I thought so.

Genocide, as in the legal definition, requires intent. As far as I see it Germany is not even trying to deny anything Israel did or does, or argue evidence in any other way, all the government is basically doing is saying "Your honour, our client can't have intent because they're demonstrably criminally insane, we know because we caused that insanity". Not in that many words, but to that effect.

It's a US thing, where the glory of SCART was unknown thus they had to continue using the antenna input of their TV to connect their consoles to, also, as far as I'm aware only NTSC has fixed frequency assignments. Elsewhere in the world you just programmed the TV to display the console's output on whatever number you wanted, or, if you had a proper input for non-antenna signals, switch the TV to "AV".

The general rule of the Warner siblings is that they're whatever they need to be for the joke to work and if you disagree you don't get it.

As a Level 3 system, the driver is permitted to take their hands off the wheel, their feet off the pedals, and divert their attention away from the road. [...]

The turquoise markers will alert other drivers to the fact that your vehicle is driving itself, so hopefully they won't be alarmed if they see you doing other things while behind the wheel.

To actually simulate a brain you'd have to put its connections and weights in there and AFAIK that data simply doesn't exist. Not even the connections.

What this is is a computer capable of simulating neuronal nets of the size of the brain... and AFAIU only the synaptic network. There's a hell a lot more going on in actual wetware, think neurotransmitters, plasticity, gene expression changing on the fly etc. To actually simulate a brain you'd either have to have a scan that's rather inconceivable to get in the necessary detail, or you need to grow it virtually from virtual DNA, simulate the development of the whole body and an environment for it to develop properly as our genome expects environmental stimulus, a mould to grow in.

Already the case. To gain citizenship you generally have to have a clear criminal record, with the exception of youth offences, fines up to 90 days, and prison up to 3 month if it was on probation, unless the motive was antisemitic, racist, xenophobic, or otherwise contemptuous of humanity.

If they want to extend it to "has done something like that that wasn't illegal" then they're going to have a hard time before court as it would amount to immigration officials infringing on prerogatives of the judicature.

26m video interview. Blurb:

"Netanyahu is history, he's done," Ehud Olmert told DW. He called the current Israeli leaders "violent, messianic thugs" and said that long term, Palestinians must be able to "exercise their right to self-determination." The center-right politician and former prime minister added that there was no alternative to the two-state solution with the Palestinians. On the issue of the scores of Israelis taken hostage by Hamas, Olmert said there was "no basis for negotiation" with Hamas — since, in his view, the Islamist militant group was not interested in negotiations. Olmert also told host Tim Sebastian that he thought there was little likelihood of direct military action against Iran, even though Tehran had "coordinated" the attacks and that a derailment of a US-sponsored diplomatic and security accord between Israel and Saudi Arabia would serve Iran's interests.

Not sure whether this counts as "news" in the strict sense but I think it does in the loose sense also I wouldn't know where else to post it.

Bill Gates at least can code. His contributions to Microsoft were mostly being a cutthroat businessman, but he can code, and did, in particular the MS Basic runtime. It's all fuzzy but I'd put him at that stage where you can code, but look at your colleagues and realise that you probably shouldn't. The not so fabled 1x developer. Not entirely rarely well-suited both as manager and QA because they understand enough to be helpful but, ego permitting, seeing they have no talent, don't get their creative instincts tied up with actually writing code.

Steve Jobs, OTOH...

See longer post (not by me) there, if all is true then they should fall under both the spam and mass lemm.ee rule breaking defederation rules, both bigotry and abusive language, though not always in combination.

Also the covenant thing Mastodon has would probably be a good idea.

Long story short: Collect/crosspost all episode discussions in /c/watchparty (or similar).

With a lot of shows I watch (not just Trek) I always found myself reading and sometimes engaging with the episode discussion, however, the meme and speculation and everything stream that came with the show-associated subreddit always was a bit much for me -- my interest waxes and wanes with things actually being on air, so I never subscribed.

A dedicated stream for that kind of stuff would be very much welcomed, also a low-churn news feed (such as "Show has been announced/renewed" etc).
