Want to see the direct consequences of unfettered hate masquerading as free speech? That would be Elon Musk, Nigel Farage et al spreading utterly incorrect rumours about migrants in the UK and goading right-wingers to set fire to hotels where migrant families are staying. Luckily no one was killed but do you think tutting and calling them idiots before you move on is going to change a thing?
I understand that, but surely the Admin who took the action isn't in a different timezone form themselves? What was stopping them immediately posting just before or just after taking the action?
You're right, anyone can scrape Lemmy. But that's not the issue (to me anyway) - Reddit have sold user data - user generated content. None of what they're profiting from was generated or created by them. Are Reddit users who did generate all this content getting a slice of the profits?
When I post on here I know it's all open for anyone to access but that's true of any non walled garden space. I've accepted the fact that it's going to get fed into the hungry maw of some AI behemoth or two.
What Reddit have done is make money for doing absolutely nothing based on content others have created like some sort of technological tapeworm feeding second hand. And along the way they killed off a lot of tools that users loved, moderators found made their jobs easier and people with a visual disability found vital. And all this so u/spez can live out his mini-Musk fantasies.
It's a comparison of mainline browsers - they haven't included any forks in it.
I don't practice privacy because I think anyone's out to get me. I don't think the gvmt know or care that I exist, much less about the opinions that I hold. I'm not trying to hide, I'm just trying to be private. I don't want there to be a shadow profile of me but if there is I want it to be as inaccurate and meager as possible. I don't want to have tailored outrage designed to sway me politically shoved at me or to be a sellable data point to increase, however marginally, some billionaire's personal wealth.
So for me, the answer to your question is that privacy itself is the tangible benefit.
I support the rights of the Palestinian and Israeli people who just want to live in peace to do that. I do not support Hamas or the Israeli Army committing atrocity after atrocity at the behest of their political leaders.
Read lots of books and never stop reading lots of books. Punching up is good, never punch down. Be compassionate but not to your own detriment. Think critically. As long as you're not hurting anyone, do what you want. Taking chances is good but make sure they're informed chances. Find things/careers/courses that you enjoy, rather than their potential for riches. Value listening over talking.
The original intent - to stop kids accessing harmful content on big tech media sites was the sole original intent. That's now morphed into the legislative tool for mass surveillance that's just been passed. That original intent wasn't a Tory idea as such, but two researchers. The addition of more and more draconian elements most definitely was from the Tories. Including the red Tory currently leading the Labour party.
I expect the Admin's priority was to worry about potentially inadvertently hosting CSAM rather than user retention.

Much, much longer than that.
TST's abortion campaign - which is strongly opposed by multiple pro-abortion support groups in multiple States - is a classic example of how they operate.
Not only are they depriving legitimate pro-abortion groups of attention and funding, they are getting people to donate money for their business.
New Mexico, where their current clinic is, has no problem with abortion. I see they're not naming the state where this new one will be but I'm betting it will be somewhere equally trouble-free for those seeking an abortion.
What this 'competition' is doing, like all TST's fundraisers, is getting you to fund their start up costs in an abortion friendly State without any requirement to give anyone a return on that donation.
If you want to support pro-abortion causes - and you should - support organisations who will actually help people.
