This is fantastic. Great news!

Why are these companies the worst? It's a honest question since I actually don't know much about them.

Some users just want to melt in to the crowd I guess.

I have my own domain and i love it. In fact, it's going to become more and more important knowing how to self host things. Big tech is extreamly preditory.

Me too, sadly.

Yeah but its never enough money coming in. So your commercial free paid streaming will either get less and less quality content (happened with Netflix etc), or it will go up in price.

I have become a bit disillusioned with how capitalism works. Not that I have any better system. They all suck because people aspiring to be in power suck.

Thor probably doesn't know how to use a computer. :) Has he in any of the movies?

Everything from these big corps have no soul. Because we know it's just about exploiting users for money.

I want the old internet back so bad. Hopefully federation can fuel many new actually fun services that are not built to make money but to actually entertain and amuse people, or simply be useful.

I personally feel pleasure from doing good things in the world. But it seems to be a group of people who doesn't feel it's worth doing something for others unless there is money to be made from it.

I think it's fairly common that people do some math in their head, specially when they get older than 30. Because it doesn't matter really, you never need to tell anyone how old you are anymore. Well unless you use dating apps I guess, or date people... Nobody else asks your age.

You don't give much thought to what Threads wants to do to the fediverse, and your concern is only what benefits yourself in the short term.

Just be aware of that. Many of us older folks have seen this process happen over and over. Threads will start to dictate what activitypub will be, and once it has many millions of users, it gives them power to influence the entire protocol.

And if people don't like that, they will have to come up with a new protocol and start over again. Which is exactly the cycle we are constantly experiencing.

I think we should not let them into our instances. Keep them as a corporate funded version of the fediverse, separate from the ones run by individuals.

But since each instance owner is free to do what they want, I estimate that many will federate with threads and suffer the consequences in the future.

I noticed this too but went to lemmyverse.net and subbed to a bunch of new things, and unsubscribed from some memes communities that were posting way too much.

I have default sort of top 6 hours, works well for fresh content.

Well, let me put it this way... Enjoy your days now, not later. :)

And prepare to move to a country where tech is not very widespread. Try to gather money so you can move if you want to.

Humans can be really nice on a individual level but society is run by evil people. I think it has always been that way. Good people don't want any part of the power struggles and backstabbing, so they forfeit power to the people who are into that. By design, the system rewards evil people. And they are also the ones who really care about money, status, and so on.

This means humanity is fucked. It's pretty simple. Unless consciousness somehow changes in everybody at once, and everyone suddenly wants to do good instead of evil. Then we have a good chance. The tech can help build a paradise here for everyone.

But that won't happen unless good aliens somehow transforms our minds into something completely different.
