So I hate to tell you this, but I'm pretty sure Robert Picardo is a hologram...

I'm usually against large institutions colluding together to kill off other institutions...

...but if the major research universities and labs all agreed to stop publishing in backwards for-profit journals, well I wouldn't exactly cry about it.

Linux is just as bad though

.zsh_history records every command you run!

(/s, obviously...)

I mean Dexter Holland has a PhD in molecular biology, but if you're dropping into a half pipe you're probably more likely to be listening to Smash than to his dissertation on tape...

Different contexts. She can run like stink (as in, fastest in the world), and I don't see how that takes away from her academic achievements.

Trump (recently) received the nomination from his party, while Biden dropped out before the DNC. I could be wrong but I think it's a little more problematic for him to drop out, although perhaps that's just related to RNC self-imposed rules and not any actual laws.

Yeah, something this big is absolutely not one engineer's fault. Even if that engineer maliciously pushed an update, it's not their fault

it was a complete failure of the organization, and one person having the ability to wreck havoc like this is the failure.

And I actually have some amount of hope that, in this case, it is being recognized as such.

Funding agencies have huge power here; demanding that research be published in OA journals is perhaps a good start (with limits on $ spent publishing, perhaps).

I've only recently branched out from router defaults...only reason was that I wanted to VLAN off my home network, and mostly just so [Home Assistant-controlled] smart devices can't talk to the Internet at all.

Wikipedia page has some explanation.

There's also this gem:

In October 2016, McDonald's decided that Ronald McDonald would keep a lower profile as a result of the incidents.

That said, a 16 year old was killed in relation to these incidents, so not completely fun and games.

Not sure if you're referencing the Steam incident, but Steam did exactly that: https://www.theregister.com/2015/01/17/scary_code_of_the_week_steam_cleans_linux_pcs/

I believe CCR said this rather eloquently:

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand

Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord?

But when the taxman come to the door

Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah
