For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, I still have a few leftover horror movies from October uploaded, so let’s keep the ball rolling with Titane (2021). It is a French body horror centering on a woman who, as the result of a childhood car crash injury, has a titanium plate fitted into her head; as an adult, she develops a fetish for cars, which leads her on a strange and often-surreal journey. Oh, and did she mention she’s also a psychopath who likes killing people? A whole lot of bloody encounters ensue from there. Director is Julia Ducournau, who also did Raw (2016), which we watched a couple of weeks ago; this is her other most-well-known film.

After that is Paterson (2016), a bloomer rom-com from Jim Jarmusch, about a New Jersey couple consisting of a bus driver (Adam Driver) and his artist wife, and their slice-of-life antics as they follow their work routines and maintain their relationship. A simple, warm movie about love. Yep, that’s it. Despite that, it has received quite a bit of critical acclaim. Jarmusch has a good record on Hextube, so let’s give it a whirl.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, I was asked for more horror, despite the passing of Halloween. November 6 is close enough, isn’t it? We’ll start with X (2022), a slasher about a group of 1970s youths who go to the middle of nowhere in Texas to make a porno. Unfortunately for them, the old people hosting them discover what they are doing, and suddenly, the crew starts being brutally murdered, one by one. Will anyone be spared? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Ti West, who also did the film’s prequel, Pearl (2022), which was released a few months afterward. I guess we’ll have to watch that one, too.

After that is The Adventures of Chatran (1986), the Japanese tale of a kitten and a dog who make their way through the wilderness together, and then are separated, and then risk everything to find each other again. It contains no dialogue except for some voiceover narration. It looks adorable. In 1989, it was cut down, rescored, and given a new, snarkier dub under the title The Adventures of Milo and Otis. We are watching the original, unabridged Japanese version, featuring its original score by the renowned Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is the most notable work of director Masanori Hata, who also worked on Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989).

CWs for The Adventures of Chatran:

  • The film is subject to a long-standing rumor that a whole bunch of cats died during production. This claim is probably bullshit, as no investigations have turned up any evidence, and both American and Japanese animal-rights groups signed off on it. Nevertheless, some of the stunts in the film probably scared the animals.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Laapataa Ladies (2023), a comedy about two arranged brides in rural India who inadvertently swap places on a train, and the wacky antics that ensue from there, including some satire of Indian gender relations and the caste system. This is by far the best-known film to date of Indian feminist director Kiran Rao, and received excellent reviews, so let’s check it out.

Next is Kiss Me Deadly (1955), a noir-thriller about a man who picks up a female hitchhiker, only for the car to be ambushed and the woman tortured to death. The dude goes on a rampage of revenge as he seeks to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, which centers around a briefcase containing a nuclear bomb. Everyone seems to want to get that damn briefcase, so the protagonist joins in the action. Director is Robert Aldrich, who is best-known for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), though this is considered arguably his magnum opus, and one of the best noirs of the 50s.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we are continuing the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 19 through 24 of the fourth part, Diamond Is Unbreakable. Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is The Big Fox and Other Tales (2017), a French cartoon anthology featuring three stories, all centering on the wacky adventures of some talking animals in the woods: in the first, a fox thinks he us a chicken; in the second, a rabbit wants to be a stork; and in the third, a duck wants to be Santa Claus. The film’s directors are Patrick Imbert, who did Summit of the Gods (2021), and Benjamin Renner, who did Ernest & Celestine (2012), both of which we have watched. Nice reviews for this one, and its aesthetic looks beautiful, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Count of Monte Cristo (2024), the new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 novel of the same name. Edmond Dantes is locked up in an island prison for a crime he didn’t commit; for years, he plots his escape, and proceeds to exact his revenge on the men who framed him. This is the highest-rated and most popular film so far of director duo Alexandre de La Patelliere and Matthieu Delaporte, and has been getting some awards buzz, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is My Winnipeg (2007), a genre-busting documentary that sorta recreates the upbringing of director Guy Maddin in Winnipeg, a lone city in the vast icy wasteland of central Canada. Fantasy, comedy, and reality all interweave as Maddin both re-enacts events from his childhood while also offering lessons on various episodes of the city’s history. This is one of the highest-rated Canadian films on Letterboxd, and Maddin’s best-known and best-regarded works to date.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, things are getting a little spooky, since it’s Halloween. First up is Antichrist (2009), a psychological horror that asks the viewer, “What if marriage was the real horror?” A dysfunctional couple (Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg) goes to a spooky cabin in the woods in hopes of reviving their passion for each other, and this, of course, is a great plan that does not result in encounters with demons or mental breakdowns. Best known as the movie where bad things happen involving scissors and genitals. We previously watched Lars bon Trier’s Bjork vehicle Dancer in the Dark (2000), but his filmography is otherwise untouched on Hextube, so let’s give this a whirl.

After that is Pulse (2001), a Japanese horror story about ghosts from the internet that start haunting people’s computers, and then the rest of their lives, too. Horror as metaphor for neoliberal capitalism, and so on. Touch Grass: The Movie. Director is Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the same guy who brought us Cure (1997), and Tokyo Sonata (2008), which were both hits on Hextube. This is one of his more popular films.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, ‘tis the season for horror, and tomorrow is Halloween, so how about a triple feature? First up is The Babadook (2014), an Australian psychological horror about a recently-widowed mother who becomes increasingly unhinged by the presence of evil spirits in her house. Having to deal with pure evil while caring for her neurodivergent son drives her to her mental limits. I would simply move out of the house, but hey, I don’t live in a horror movie. This is b far the best-known feature to date of director Jennifer Kent.

After that is A Chinese Ghost Story (1987), a Hong Kong wuxia tale of a tax collector who cannot find an inn for the night, and decides to shack up in a spooky temple instead. Oh no, it’s haunted! Cue the arrival of a bunch if spirits who want to unleash their wrath on the living. Luckily, a swordsman is there to kick some monster butt. Director is Tony Ching Siu-Tung, who also did Duel to the Death (1983), which we recently watched. This is considered one of the better wuxia films of the 80s, so let’s check it out.

Last is Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998), the first, and best-regarded, of the direct-to-video Scoob movies. The gang goes to a spooky bayou island to investigate a pirate’s ghost, but they come across a horde of zombies instead. They’re not real, right? It’s Scooby-Doo; you know the drill.

For this Sunday Kino Night, ‘tis the season for horror, so first up is Kuroneko (1968), a Japanese ghost story about the ghost of a r*ped murdered woman who returns for revenge on men. After she slaughters a few of them, the local governor sends a young man to confront the ghost, and spookiness ensues. This is considered one of the best Japanese horror films of all time, and arguably the magnum opus of director Kaneto Shindo, who is otherwise best-known for the similarly-themed Onibaba (1964), which we previously watched. Currently ranked #35 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 horror films of all time.

Next is Riceboy Sleeps (2022), a Canadian drama about a Korean single mom who immigrates to Canada in the 1990s in search of a better future for both herself and her son. Drama ensues as the boy grows up and begins to grow distant from his mom, as he disavows his Korean identity in favor of assimilation. God Damn KKKanada: The Movie. Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is Uzumaki (2024), the much-anticipated animated adaptation of Junji Ito’s much-acclaimed horror manga of the same name. A curse on a Japanese town compels everyone to start becoming obsessed with spirals, which start appearing everywhere in increasingly-gruesome fashion. A girl tries to escape from the town, but she has some difficulties as the townspeople’s collective psychosis grows more extreme. For this Friday Movie Night, the people have demanded more horror. ‘Tis the season, so we will watch Santa Sangre (1989), one of the best-regarded works of renowned auteur Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo [1970], The Holy Mountain [1973]). This one is mostly in English, centering on a former circus performer who escapes from a mental hospital and joins a deranged cult led by his mother, who demands blood from infidels. The cuts between flashbacks to his sickofied upbringing in his parents’ surreally-sadistic circus and the various murders he commits in the present on behalf of the cult. It’s Jodorowsky, so be prepared for weird stuff. Currently ranked #41 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 horror films.

After that is How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024), a Thai family drama about a young man who drops out of university and starts taking care of his dying grandmother, cynically seeking to secure his inheritance from her. Will he learn to appreciate her for something other than her money? I guess we’ll find out. It is the feature-film debut of director Pat Boonnitipat. A bunch of awards buzz around this one. Currently ranked #150 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 films of all time.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, things are getting a little spooky, since Halloween is just around the corner. First up is Raw (2016), a critically-acclaimed French body horror about a young vegan woman in veterinary school who eats raw meat for the first time as part of a hazing ritual and quickly develops an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Carnism is bad, okay? Director is Julia Ducournau, who also did another body horror film, Titane (2021), which we have not yet watched.

After that is Nope (2022), a hit thriller from Jordan People (Get Out [2017], Us [2019]) about a big hole in the sky that appears above a California ranch and starts eating people. Aaaaahhh!! Will anyone escape its wrath? I guess we’ll find out. Good reviews, and it raked in a lot of money at the box office.
