For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, things are getting a little spooky, since Halloween is just around the corner. First up is Raw (2016), a critically-acclaimed French body horror about a young vegan woman in veterinary school who eats raw meat for the first time as part of a hazing ritual and quickly develops an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Carnism is bad, okay? Director is Julia Ducournau, who also did another body horror film, Titane (2021), which we have not yet watched.

After that is Nope (2022), a hit thriller from Jordan People (Get Out [2017], Us [2019]) about a big hole in the sky that appears above a California ranch and starts eating people. Aaaaahhh!! Will anyone escape its wrath? I guess we’ll find out. Good reviews, and it raked in a lot of money at the box office.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, ‘tis the season for horror, so it’s time to dip back into prolific Japanese horror maestro Takashi Miike’s filmography with one of his best-known works, Ichi the Killer (2001), which is adapted from the manga of the same name. It centers on a sadistic yakuza enforcer who unexpectedly comes across an even bigger sicko than he is, the eponymous Ichi, and a rivalry develops them as they members of each other’s factions. We watched Miike’s Happiness of the Katakuris (2001) last week, and it was good, so let’s hope this continues the trend. Did I mention this movie was violent enough to be banned from several countries in its initial release? Not for the squeamish.

After that is ParaNorman (2012), a zombie-themed stop-motion animated comedy from Laika, the studio behind Coraline (2009) and Kubo & the Two Strings (2016). A boy with the ability to talk to dead people must use his powers to prevent a witch’s curse from unleashing a zombie apocalypse on his town. Hilarity ensues, along with the usual slapstick antics that one may expect from a family-friendly zombie movie. Good reviews for this one, so we’ll give it a whirl. For this Sunday Kino Night, ‘tis the season for horror, so first up is Demons (1971), a Japanese revenge tale centering on an 18th-century exiled samurai who gathers 100 ryo to buy his way back into the good graces of his clan. Unfortunately, he’s also infatuated with a geisha who is about to be sold to another man to pay off her debts, which just so happen to total 100 ryo. Turns out she’s actually in leagues with the other guy, and they make off with his money. Cue total jokerfication as the samurai goes on a rampage of revenge. This is considered one of the best films of renowned auteur Toshio Matsumoto, who is otherwise best-known for Funeral Parade of Roses (1969), which we have not yet watched. Currently ranked #12 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 horror films of all time.

Next is Didi (2024), a coming-of-age comedy about a 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy in 2008, who is just hitting puberty and needs to learn how to navigate life, be cool, and talk to girls. Social awkwardness ensues. Pretty much mid90s (2019) but for Zillennials. A lot of critical acclaim for this one, and it’s getting some awards buzz, so let’s check it out. It is the debut feature of director Sean Wang, who was born in 1994, so I suspect it’s at least partially autobiographical.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re finally returning to the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 7 through 12 of the fourth part, Diamond Is Unbreakable. Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is Flow (2024), a French animation about a cat navigating the post-apocalyptic wilderness of Earth after humanity has seemingly disappeared. A flood threatens the cat’s home, and so, it finds refuge on a boat as it drifts through the new landscape. Will kitty find a new home? I guess we’ll find out. This has a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and is being called the best animated film of the year. Comparisons to the games Stray (2022) and Ico (2001) are common. It is the best-known and best-regarded work to date of director Gints Zilabalodis.

For this Friday Movie Night, the people have demanded more horror. ‘Tis the season, so we will watch I Saw the Devil (2010), which centers on a Korean serial killer who murders for fun. A detective decides to track him down and capture him, and a cat-and-mouse game ensues between the two. Expect a whole lot of blood and gore as the film shows the exploits of its resident sicko. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of Korean director Kim Jee-woon, who also did A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), which we have not watched. Currently ranked #36 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 horror films of all time.

After that is Sing Sing (2024), a prison drama about an African-American man who is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. While he stews in confinement, he joins the prison’s theatre group and it becomes his lifeline amidst the inhumane conditions of the Amerikkkan “justice” system. Theatre kids really are everywhere these days. This is by far the most popular and best-regarded film of director Greg Kwedar to date. Currently ranked #172 on Letterboxd’s Top 250 films of all time.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Goyokin (1969), a Japanese chanbara film about a ronin (a masterless samurai) who renounces his loyalties after failing to stop the massacre of a village. He plots his revenge against the perpetrators to prevent a new massacre from taking place. Dudes are gonna rock. Pretty much a cowboy movie, but with a samurai. Expect a lot of sword fights. Director is Hideo Gosha, who specialized in chanbara stuff; this is arguably his magnum opus.

After that is Alien: Romulus (2024), the latest installment in the oft-retooled Alien franchise, this time from Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez, the man behind Don’t Breathe (2016). A bunch of scientists check out a spooky abandoned space ship and, surprise!, there’s a diabolical alien that implants itself into their bodies, bursts from their chests, and so on. Sounds like they pretty much remade Alien (1979). I guess we’ll find out.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, the people have demanded horror, so we’ll watch a particularly popular modern horror movie: Insidious (2010). It centers on a couple who move into a spooky house and then become shocked when spooky things start happening. Demons start possessing their son and then go “boo!” a lot. I would simply move out of the house, but hey, I don’t live in a horror movie. Director is James Wan, the guy who brought us The Conjuring (2012), as well as, uhh, Aquaman (2018). A ringing endorsement. I guess it is slop night.

After that, by request, is Happiness of the Katakuris (2001), an absurdist comedy-musical from exceptionally prolific Japanese auteur Takashi Miike. Surprisingly, the only other Miike we’ve watched is his video-game adaptation Yakuza (2007). This seems like a good place to start. It centers on a family that runs a guest house out in the middle of nowhere. Their guests suddenly start dying, and they have to go to increasingly ridiculous lengths to cover up each incident, including taking out others who discover the truth. Hilarity ensues as the cartoonish antics pile up. A cult classic.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Time of the Gypsies (1988), a Serbian black comedy about a young Roma man who discovers he has telekinetic powers, which comes in handy in the crumbling (and increasingly neoliberalizing) hellscape that is 1980s Yugoslavia. He uses his powers in his quest to get rich quick, but the criminal underworld threatens to undo him; darkly-comic antics ensue. Director is renowned auteur Emir Kusturica, whose Black Cat White Cat (1998) and Underground (1995) we previously watched; those were both great, funny films, and this appears to be in the same vein. One of the highest-rated Serbian films on Letterboxd.

Next is The Browning Version (1951), an extremely British drama about an aging professor who is forced to retire early due to a heart condition. He is at first content with his lot, only to discover that his wife is cheating on him, his students think he’s a joke, and his colleagues have secretly despised him for years. Cue midlife crisis as he tries to repair his ego and reassure himself that his life has meant something. Arguably the magnum opus of prolific director Anthony Asquith, who is otherwise best-known for Pygmalion (1938). Considered one of the best British films of the 1950s.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re finally returning to the much-beloved anime adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s legendary manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, with episodes 1 through 6 of the fourth part, Diamond Is Unbreakable (2016). Expect a whole bunch of muscley guys doing silly poses while fighting other muscley guys.

After that is Lucky and Zorba (1998), an Italian animated buddy film about a cat who agrees to a seagull mother’s dying wish to take care of her baby. He must learn how to take care of the little bird and teach it how to fly, all the while resisting his natural carnivoran instincts to eat it. This is considered the magnum opus of animator Enzo D’Alo, and arguably the best animation from Italy (though Allegro Non Troppo [1976] would be a contender there, too.) A whole generation o Italians seem to consider this a classic, so let’s check it out.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Another Year (2010), a British slice-of-life drama from Mike Leigh, who is best-known for Naked (1993) and Secrets &n Lies (1996), neither of which we have watched. It centers on a happily-married old bougie couple whose happiness is interrupted by the incursions of their shitty family and friends, all of whom are determined to bring their drama into the couple’s lives. This is just what life is like in the UK. A lot of critical acclaim for this, and we’ve never watched any of Leigh’s stuff, so let’s check it out.

After that is Kneecap (2024), the first rap musical film made entirely in the Irish language. Follow the fictionalized real-life tale of a trio of staunchly republican, working-class Belfast dudes who start a rap group to save their native tongue and decolonize their country from the Br*tish. This is the debut feature of director Rich Peppiatt, and has already been receiving some awards buzz. Currently the highest-rated Irish-language film on Letterboxd. We’ll give it a try.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Enter the Void (2009), a psychedelic melodrama-art-thriller about a drugn dealer who is shot dead by the police, after which he goes on a strange journey through the afterlife, taking him through the seedy Tokyo underworld. Its gimmick is that it is shot entirely from the POV of the protagonist, i.e., a first-person view, in video-game parlance. Director is Gaspar Noe (the same guy behind Climax [2018]), so expect a whole lot of sex, drugs, and violence along the way. Looks neat; let’s check it out.

After that is REC (2007), a Spanish found-footage horror film centering on a film crew that follows some firefighters into what looks like a routine job in an apartment building, only for the building to be sealed off with everyone still inside as a strange disease spreads among them. Things go from bad to worse from there. It is the best-known and best-regarded work of director duo Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza. This is considered one of the better films of its ilk, so we’ll give it a whirl.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is the long-awaited Joker: Folie a Deux, which is currently bombing spectacularly at the box office. What if they made a sequel to Joker (2019) that consisted almost entirely of courtroom drama and musical numbers featuring Lady Gaga? Sounds pretty neat to me, but apparently, general audiences do not agree. We’ll decide for ourselves.

After that is Pedicab Driver (1989), a Hong Kong action comedy about two pedicab drivers in Macau who must work together to save their love interests (one a baker, and the other a prostitute) from their evil bosses. A whole lot of fighting and comic antics ensue as they start to attract the attention of the criminal underworld. Considered one of the best works of Sammo Hung, who both directs and stars. Looks cool; let’s watch.
