I’ve been running a public full node for a couple of months at Linode (long time customer). Currently it’s about (converted) US$50/month.

I’m not going to stop the node, I love Monero and the project’s vision. It’s not breaking the bank, just looking for less costly hosting.

Thanks!

Hello everyone, I'd like to expand on a thought I had the other day: I think the reason Monero isn't taking off compared to its potential is because it's too far ahead of the real world.

I think Monero will be a huge thing in 30 or 40 years' time, but we will just have to be patient. Like, VERY patient. I think having even one full XMR could be a crazy thing by 2060 or 2070.

To understand Monero, you need to understand Bitcoin. Logical, since Monero was inspired by Bitcoin in the first place.

But people who know Monero well often forget that:

  • For many people, Bitcoin is still a novelty they haven't yet understood.
  • For those who know a little, they think Bitcoin is an alternative, fungible and anonymous payment system.
  • For those who know a lot, Bitcoin's flaws are obvious (non-fungibility, traceability of transactions etc.) and they know about Monero.

But Monero is known to very few people worldwide, and understood by even fewer. These people will come little by little, but it will take a very long time.

So I think Monero's main flaw (and only one?) is that it meets a need that people are not yet aware of. Hence the ridiculous price of the token for such an incredible project

We all remember that image of the comparison between gold, fiat, digital fiat, bitcoin, and monero withe the letter grades. Is there any version of that with the most popular privacy coins, even though Monero is more popular by a landslide?

The current is .6 XMR with 2 minute average block time. Why not lower the block time by decreasing the difficulty and the block reward so that transactions can be confirmed faster?

The first week has been a wild ride, and there is a lot to share. Presented roughly by order of importance:

PR Improving Node Startup

Restarting a node while there is a large mempool can take over an hour in extreme conditions, since the node must process all the mempool transactions before resuming regular operation. 0xFFFC has addressed this with a massive speed up in PR 9376. These changes are now in use on the stressnet, to great effect.

Block Sync Size

Block propagation and network synchronization suffer at larger block sizes, which encourages the creation of alternative chains. Setting '--block-sync-size 1' allows nodes to handle larger blocks more easily, and this is now standard practice on the stressnet. Further updates are expected on this soon.

Ongoing Investigations

  • Block sync size
  • Wallet-to-daemon connectivity and performance enhancements
  • Tx pool management (including flush_txpool processing time

General Announcements

  • Go to monitor.stressnet.net to see network stats
  • explorer.stressnet.net is offline for now
  • Node operators should upgrade to latest release for a smooth(er) stressnet experience. Older releases struggle with larger blocks, and ban too many nodes.
  • Congratulations to strawberry, winner of the wallet draining competition
  • Ongoing discussion is being held on Matrix at #monero-stressnet:monero.social and Libera Chat IRC on ##monero-stressnet.

Stressnet Stats

  • This plot shows the block sizes on stressnet over the past week
  • Largest Block: 2.49 MB at height 2521514
  • Most transactions processed in an hour: 33074 (equivalent of 794000 tx per day)

We still see new versions coming out every two weeks or so which means bugs get weeded out and usability improves.

If you haven't tried it you may want to look into it, especially since you now will also find scripts to run it on Tails.

Imagine that Monero becomes more popular and businesses begin accepting Monero. Because the govt is not getting tax money, they decide to force businesses to either give up a proportion of their Monero profit as tax or shut them down or levy some other penalty. Could the government find out how much they actually owe by forcing business owners to open their wallets and prove their transaction history? Could business owners get around this by creating fake wallets and only putting in small amounts so they only get taxed a little bit? But then couldn't the govt verify by checking the transaction history of the wallet? I am probably just a noob

Edit: can the govt also audit you by forcing you to do the same with your wallet and showing all the transactions in it? Or they can force your employer to provide transaction receipts when they pay you for example?

What if the Monero developers all disappeared at some point under mysterious circumstances? *cough cough alphabet boys* How would Monero continue to be improved? Would there be endless forks with different communities choosing to support different forks based on their features? Would OG monero users just stick to the older tech until it died out from simply not keeping up? Maybe I'm just a noob.

Why do we not like centralized pools hogging too much hashrate percentage?

  • 51% attack
  • mining blocks that consists of only their spam txs
    • basically, chain bloat + depriving honest miners

Designing pool resistance won't work. There's already a pool up for Wownero mining. So, that approach won't work. As long as solo mining is allowed, imo, we're not getting rid of pools.

IMO, the core of the issue is miner's ability to choose what transactions to include in the block.

This is where P2Pool comes to the rescue. Essentially, it will act as a decentralized authority for block templates.

  • Big pools will still exist. However, their impact is significantly reduced. At the end of the day, they will still be mining on P2Pool. Trying to do any shenanigans will get them kicked out of the network.

The only concern (that I can think of) is privacy. Could that be solved by something similar to stealth address?

edit: Basically, I'm arguing to make P2Pool as the only way of mining.

Hey all, Tommy from AllArk here. We are expanding to Peer-to-peer, private, Face to face transactions with zero KYC to exchange XMR for Cash.

In the rapidly evolving world of digital currencies, Monero stands as a pioneer, offering users a decentralized form of money that can be transacted across borders with ease. However, one aspect of Monero trading that has garnered significant attention is the practice of exchanging Monero for cash in face-to-face transactions. This method, though traditional, offers unique benefits, particularly in the realms of simplicity, privacy, and anonymity.

Simplicity One of the primary advantages of face-to-face Monero-to-cash exchanges is their straightforwardness. Unlike online exchanges, which often require users to navigate complex platforms, understand varying fee structures, and comply with stringent verification processes, face-to-face transactions are remarkably simple. The process typically involves a direct trade between two individuals, where Monero is transferred from one digital wallet to another in exchange for physical cash. This directness eliminates the need for intermediaries, reducing both the steps involved and the chances of encountering technical difficulties or errors.

Furthermore, this method allows for instant gratification. While online transactions can sometimes take hours or even days to process, especially during periods of high network congestion, face-to-face exchanges are immediate. Once the Monero transfer is confirmed on the network, the cash changes hands, providing instant access to funds.

Privacy Privacy concerns are ever-present in the digital age, and many Monero users value the ability to keep their financial activities discrete. Face-to-face exchanges offer a level of privacy that is hard to match in the digital realm. Unlike online platforms, which often require detailed personal information and financial disclosures, face-to-face trades can be conducted without revealing much more than a pseudonym or a first name.

This level of privacy stems from the nature of the transaction itself. Since the trade is conducted in person, there is no digital record of the exchange beyond the private Monero transaction on the blockchain. This drastically reduces the amount of personal data that is shared or stored, minimizing the risk of identity theft or other privacy breaches.

Anonymity Anonymity is closely related to privacy but takes it a step further. Monero is often touted for its pseudonymous nature, where transactions are recorded on the blockchain but linked only to wallet addresses, not individuals' names. Face-to-face exchanges enhance this anonymity by removing the digital footprint associated with online exchanges.

When trading Monero for cash in person, there is no requirement to provide identification, no KYC (Know Your Customer) checks, and no third-party oversight. This makes it nearly impossible for external entities to trace the transaction back to the individuals involved. For users who prioritize anonymity, this method of exchange is unparalleled.

Conclusion In conclusion, exchanging Monero for cash in face-to-face transactions offers several compelling benefits. The simplicity of the process makes it accessible to users of all experience levels, while the enhanced privacy and anonymity preserve the core values that many Monero enthusiasts hold dear. As digital currencies continue to evolve, face-to-face exchanges remain a valuable and secure method of preserving personal freedom and financial confidentiality.

AllArk goes a step further and can deliver Cash to any of the supported cities with nothing else needed from you. Cash can be delivered at any venue you choose as well. And couriers need nothing other than address, time and any directions you deem fit for your use case. 🙂

Hope this helps some of you out there!
