since not everyone might be looking at the r/xmrtrader

u/monerobull posted that solution to update without loosing access to the account:

What has worked for me is backing up the entire XMR_Mainnet folder from the Haveno app directory located at:

-Linux: ~/.local/share/Haveno-reto/

-macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Haveno-reto/

-Windows: ~\AppData\Roaming\Haveno-reto\

then i installed the new version via the installer and copied my saved folder over the new one it created.

to which OP replied that it aso worked for them as well

There's a user on here (looks like the r/Monero mods already are aware of some of these shenanigans) by the name of u/HavenoMain that is run by this group. They're buying up the following domains:

  • haveno.sc
  • haveno.bz
  • haveno.me
  • haveno.at
  • haveno.im
  • haveno.app
  • haveno.site

As well as

  • havenofund.org
  • havenofund.com

and probably more. And you know they're doing SEO which is probably all they're good at besides launching WordPress sites.

They're talking a whole lot of noise as if they're the Haveno team or stewards of the Haveno project or other nonsense.

I'm not too concerned that our community will fall for this nonsense. But I am concerned that people new to Monero are going to google "Haveno" and click one of their sites and fall for who knows what they're up to. What do you think needs to be done to prevent this from happening?

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

  • Kraken (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
  • LocalMonero (localmonero[dot]co): peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.

That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, ChangeNOW and SideShift.AI. These services are only recommendations (which change over time) and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. DYOR and be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

  1. Wallet: CLI & GUI ====================

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:

  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.

If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version? --------------------------------------...

I think there is some intentional misdirection happening around Monero.

  1. Binance announces that they're delisting Monero
  2. Monero drops to ~1 USD tanks, which is normal reaction to FUD type news
  3. BTC and the rest of the market goes on a crazy bull run to ATH. Apparently out of nowhere people started caring about BTC ETF? Or they actually entered existence.
  4. Then on May 20th, Binance disables Monero withdrawals. On the same exact day, the SEC makes a statement about ETH, and rumors of ETH ETF come out and again the market skyrockets.

Are the folks pulling the strings using ETFs to distract from Monero, or to suppress volatility?

What are your tin-foil hat takes?

The feds invented tor and released it to the public so that their traffic was mixed up with everybody else’s. Now it’s a tool everybody can use to protect their privacy on the web.

The same thing would’ve happened eventually with cryptocurrencies once they realized how powerful a tool that can protect financial privacy digitally is. They are probably using it now to send money to operatives privately. For this reason, I don’t think the US will ban it.

This time, the people beat the feds to it, which is an awesome achievement.

some thoughts on this:

-if someone sells XMR to a CEX, without having bought XMR from that CEX, he is suspicious. he should have holded the coins

-selling 300 XMR only 35 minutes after getting 304 XMR in an instant exchange is: too little time and too similar ammount

More Reddiit shenanigans after they went public. I couldn't log in here for some time, and it took me an hour to find this workaround. Hope it helps others, particularly in this sub. At least until Reddit finds this workaround and kills it.

tldr: for now, works.

More info and complaints here

Hey folks - this morning we rolled out a change to certain login and authentication touch points that you may have been using to access Reddit. Specifically changes to old.reddit/login, the inline login form in the top right of old reddit, as well as a few other standalone authentication touch points. For some context behind these changes - our newer authentication surfaces (such as www.reddit.com/login) are more secure and utilize reCAPTCHA which helps us better identify malicious activity, so we’re swapping to these updated and secure pages instead of maintaining a separate login flow for old.reddit. We’ll also be redirecting users back to old.reddit after authenticating, so you do not need to use any redirect extensions or swap the URL back to “old” unless you wish to. To quell any concerns - we’re not removing old.reddit and have no plans to do so. Please note - our updated login pages use Google reCAPTCHA in the background and some browser extensions may interfere with logins. If you have trouble logging in, your first step should be disabling your browser extensions (you can then enable them once logged in). Thanks!

Unfortunately, I can't access my account on Bank of America through tor. Whenever I try to open the website, it will load for about a minute before saying I couldn't connect. Hello guys!

My idea is that we could donate Monero to charity at least once a month or few times a year, depends on the budget ofc.

In practice, this would look like once a month I would transfer the Monero amount into my account, deposit the amount and use 100% of the after tax amount for donations (shelters, people in care, important expensive surgery, children's home, etc.. ). If there is a possibility to pay with Monero (dog food or send Monero directly to the orgs), of course we will priotize it, because we can give more value without FIAT money (because of tax).

Who decides where to transfer money? The community. Before each donation, we would do a week-long poll to see who we want to donate to. Everyone's vote will be worth the same regardless of the money sent in.

That's all well and good so far, but there is a big problem, trust.(At least for me it would be, with projects like this) Because of the privacy network, no one can see for themselves how much money has been raised and how much has actually gone to the cause for which they sent the money. I would be happy if there was a solution (maybe you know a solution), but if there is no solution, trust is the only thing left.

Once we have sent the money to the place where we voted or used the money collected to buy the donation we need. I would of course photograph and document the successful handover for you and anyone who wants can flex it on social media to show what a great community we are.

The project will not have a special name, everything will be donated under the name of Monero community, because the goal is to slow down the witch hunt against privacy networks and people who think that only criminals use Monero and other privacy networks or just crypto, should read positive news about us.

So in short:

Do you think there is a place for such a project?

Is there a way for the community to check its cash flow?

What kind of community spaces should we use to manage this together and also keep our privacy? (Signal?Telegram?X?Discord? All of them or something else?)

I posted this idea with fear because I don't want you to think I am a scammer and ban me.

Thank you for your clever ideas and opinions.

If this post feels dangerous, feel free to delete it.

Hi

I was wondering if anyone wants to take over these projects.

just send me a DM or answer here.

monerochan.city was supposed to be the website for the browser wallet I wrote. the code is a bit rotten at this point, but could be used as a starting point.

monerochan.news is a news site with some articles and interviews about monero.

monerochan.cash is just a portfolio page for some monero related projects I made, but it could be turned into something else.

Greetings everyone,

This is Tommy, representing AllArk.

It's been our pleasure to facilitate the conversion of Monero into traditional currency formats for our customers through various means such as:

Bank Transfers Mailed Cash Debit Card Transactions

Since our inception in 2022, our mail-based cash exchange primarily catered to the US clientele, however, we've observed a rising demand from our European friends and globetrotters.

In response, we've partnered with OTC trading desks within the EU to offer our Monero liquidation services via mail, now accessible across all EU member states. :)

Rest assured, any cash sent is carefully tracked and insured, ensuring it reaches you within a maximum of three business days.

We've recently concluded a beta phase, during which we received positive reviews.

We're thrilled to extend this service to the European Monero community, helping them effortlessly liquidate or utilize their XMR.

Wishing you all a fantastic day!

Best, Tommy from AllArk

In the very likely scenario that monero is outlawed, as I am sure it is on some places (esp. For goods and services), I think we should explore a mechanism to allow monero users to find one another and still use it as currency in a fashion that doesn't out themselves as Monero users.

I have talked about this before, and it's not the best, but I think is worth bringing up again, hopefully someone smarter than me can improve it:

there should be a messaging protocol that makes usernames or accounts based on the same exact address format as Monero addresses. Perhaps the private key of the messaging app is based on the private or public view key of your monero wallet.

This way you can signal to people: yes, I accept monero, more than likely, but have plausible deniability that you actually do accept monero.

The Jesus Fish, Ichthys, was used to signal to other Christians at a time when they were persecuted, that they were in good company.

"It has been claimed that Christians used it to recognize churches and other believers during a time when they faced persecution in the Roman Empire"

I can see where an online shop might have something like this:

Contact us on Ichthys: (XMR address) A buyer could then contact them: how much for this item plus shipping? Seller: "$100" (Buyer sends XMR to address) Buyer: oh, ok thank you. Can't afford that right now but I had one previously, I was wondering if I could get a free replacement? (Seller checks payment on blockchain and sees $100 was sent) Seller: in that case I am happy to send a free replacement.

(Ideally messaging app would be encrypted, but still as a seller/buyer act in such a way that the other could be an agent/Honeypot etc)

Admittedly it's kind of stupid, but the core concept makes sense to me: the one thing that reveals you are a monero user, or cryptocurrency user, is to send or display a monero address.

If we create other apps that also use monero addresses, then it's not strictly true. Maybe you only use the messaging app.

This arguably improves privacy of monero users outside of the protocol.

Would love others to put thoughts to this. Perhaps a scheme could be devised that looks entirely different than a monero address but a buyer could derive the XMR address from it that the seller has the private spend key to. That way it doesn't even seem monero-y

Professional conduct regulation cases do not support the constitutionality of this rulemaking

The existing broker disclosure obligations as applied to customer agents and principals, though never explicitly validated in the courts, may alternatively be found constitutional as a reasonable regulation of professional conduct that incidentally burdens some speech activities of the persons engaged in that regulated conduct. In that interpretation, the conduct being regulated is that of entering into an agency relationship with a customer or else acting as the principal in a sale to the customer. While a written contract is speech, the assumption of a legal relationship that it embodies is doubtlessly conduct and can be the subject of regulation.

As the Court held in United States v. O’Brien, laws affecting speech that are aimed at the regulation of non-expressive conduct are still analyzed under First Amendment jurisprudence, but face a lower level of constitutional scrutiny than laws aimed directly at the regulation of expressive conduct or at speech activities themselves: “a sufficiently important governmental interest in regulating the nonspeech element [of the regulated conduct] can justify incidental limitations on First Amendment freedoms.”47 The compulsion to merely report privately to the IRS and to the taxpayer certain “purely factual and uncontroversial information” about the regulated non-expressive conduct may rightly be framed as an “incidental” limitation on traditional brokers’ otherwise unabridged First Amendment rights.

The O’Brien standard, however, is only applicable if the rule is targeted at regulating non-expressive conduct. Things become more complicated when the rule is targeted at regulating expressive conduct or at speech itself. There is a long though underappreciated line of cases stemming from O’Brien that points toward a reasonably straightforward series of tests for when regulation of professional conduct that burdens speech activities is constitutional. That line has been best illuminated by attorney Robert Kry in his article, “The ‘Watchman for Truth’: Professional Licensing and the First Amendment.”48 Kry, summarizing and synthesizing many cases, finds that

In the case of a broker who is, in fact, an agent of a customer or a principal in a sale to a customer, the regulation is plausibly aimed at the non-expressive component of the professional’s activity. An agent under common law principles is acting on behalf of her customer. When a broker agrees to a sale, she binds the customer to that sale. The reporting requirement, therefore, is merely a requirement to disclose certain facts about one’s sales, i.e. one’s conduct as an agent. As a principal in a sale to a customer, the broker is, once again, engaged in conduct, a sale, and the reporting requirement merely discloses facts about that conduct. Additionally, brokers of this type are in most cases already subject to a licensing or registration requirement under other statutes.50 Those forms of professional conduct are traditionally regulated and the tax laws merely provide for an additional recordkeeping and reporting requirement associated with that conduct. Altogether, the reporting requirement, though compelled speech, appears to be a regulation aimed at the non-expressive component of a professional’s activity. It is therefore likely constitutional.

As described earlier however, the Treasury Department’s proposed rule inappropriately departs from that customer agent or principal standard and seeks to compel speech from persons who are engaged in no such regulated conduct. A mere publisher or maintainer of software, websites, or smart contracts is not in an agency relationship with any customer, nor is she selling anything to any customer apart from, potentially, a license to use her tools or a fee charged for relaying or publishing the user’s data on a communications network or blockchain. Additionally, unlike typical brokerage, these activities do not trigger any licensing or registration requirements under other state or federal statutory schemes.

Indeed, even when such person is relaying actual cryptocurrency transaction messages that, once recorded in the blockchain, will effect a sale of some cryptocurrency, these entities typically have no actual ability to act on behalf of the user and no actual or apparent authority under agency law to act on their behalf. At most, they can choose whether or not to relay the signed transaction message (but so too can an internet service provider); they cannot alter the contents of that message such that the terms of the sale would change. They cannot and do not act as an agent of any customer nor are they a principal in a digital asset sale to any customer.51

These persons may be involved in conduct in other ways, such as paying for web hosting services, paying fees on cryptocurrency networks to record software or data in the blockchain, taking fees from users to relay their messages, or simply paying rent or otherwise maintaining facilities wherein they or their employees do the work of developing software or maintaining communications tools, but all of those activities are aimed at engaging in speech, the publication of software and data, and none of those activities give rise to the type of fiduciary or agency-like financial relationship, i.e. conduct, that justifies third-party tax reporting obligations.

Moreover, these persons have deliberately designed their software, websites, and smart contract tooling such that it can be useful to a trader and capable of facilitating their trades or other desires without the need for any agency relationship or for any legal or trust-based relationship with the publisher or any other party whatsoever. The user can and does do it all themselves. That is the point of cryptocurrency and “decentralized finance.” We can debate the merit of such a design goal,52 but what is not debatable is that this is how these tools are presently designed.53 By demanding that these publishers rewrite their tools such that an agency relationship is established between the author of the tool and its user, such that the name, Social Security number, and other intimate details of the user are entrusted to the alleged “broker,” the regulation is squarely aimed at compelling not merely the disclosure of trading data and taxable gains, but also the compelled creation of significant expressive software and tooling to solicit and collect data in a manner that would otherwise be antithetical to the goals of the software developer. Such an order is so unprecedented that it is difficult to find appropriate metaphors or past examples. It is as if a state—frustrated that it cannot determine who is reading which books—ordered that novelists shall hold in-person book readings during which they must collect and report information about their audience.

Accordingly, when applied to mere publishers and maintainers of software, websites, and smart contracts, these regulations target the expressive activity of the alleged broker. That does not mean, however, that such rules will automatically be unconstitutional. The Court has dealt with several regulatory schemes aimed at expressive professional conduct, such as a lawyer giving legal advice to a client. Throughout these cases the Court has developed a robust series of standards for constitutionality that are focused primarily on “which kinds of advice are licensable based on how closely they resemble forms of communication associated with fiduciary relationships.”54 This leads us to the second question in Kry’s analysis of the First Amendment limits to regulating professional conduct, what he calls the “value neutral test” because it applies irrespective of whether the speech affected is a matter of public concern and irrespective of the motives of the speaker:
