I have some Monero Coins that I'd like to redeem in the US. I have a Binance US account but it appears they don't support Monero.

Can the group walk me through what exchange I should open an account with so I can exchange Monero into Bitcoin or Ethereum then send those Bitcoins to Coinbase to be redeemed into US Dollars?

... One thing is clear: Eight years in, few people actually use Zcash. The protocol earns about $30 a day in fees and processes just 3 transactions a minute. Its total fee revenue of 2023 was only $14k ... It’s not alone in its struggles. As Forbes pointed out in March, numerous billion dollar crypto zombies roam the digital landscape. Blockchain zombie, Monero, another privacy coin developed in 2014 has a $2.7 billion market cap but like Zcash almost no one uses it – or pays fees ...

... the big question facing Zcash and others is whether there is enough demand for privacy coins in the first place. Users value convenience over privacy. It’s one reason why most have shrugged off privacy breaches and concerns on mega tech platforms like Facebook or TikTok ...

Fervent as ever, Wilcox likes to tell the story of a Syrian refugee who participated in the country’s pro-democracy protests early in the last decade. “He found out that he was on the enemies list of the government, they seized his bank accounts, and he had to flee. He used zcash to protect his wealth. He talked to me years later and said,” You Americans don't understand what Zcash means. Zcash is a way to have the rights of an American without being an American.”

EDIT:

The number of XMR transactions is only 5% of BTC transactions (but about 6 times more than ZEC).

EDIT2:

I used the Brave browser - the article was not locked.

Testing has been successful, and plans are already in place to continue the network for at least another 2 months. While we have reached the end of the originally planned time frame, there is an enduring need for further testing. For anyone willing, your sustained or new participation is welcome!

The stressnet is resetting on August 10 (tomorrow) by reforking the testnet. All node operators should run the latest release to participate (click here).

Ongoing discussion is being held on Matrix at #monero-stressnet:monero.social and Libera Chat IRC on ##monero-stressnet.

Results:

As a result of testing, developers have produced a set of improvements. These cover correctly recognizing blocks as valid during abnormal operations, increasing daemon performance during large transaction volumes, and discussing synchronization design.

Stats and Graphics

  • Largest block was 7.96 MB at height 2535337 with 4652 transactions.
  • Most transactions in a block is 4909 at height 2535307
  • Most transactions cleared in 30 consecutive blocks: 100863 transactions starting at block 2547555.
  • See the full stressnet block size data here
  • Chronological Animation showing the block size (blue) and penalty median (red) over the testing period
  • Sorted Chronological Animation showing the block size (blue) and penalty median (red) over the testing period, with the blocks for each frame sorted by size. If the description seems confusing just watch this at the same time as the chronological animation and it should make sense.
  • Month 1 Combined Plots showing the block size, penalty median, miner reward, and penalty for the first month
  • Month 2 Combined Plots showing the block size, penalty median, miner reward, and penalty for the second month

Items for Future Attention:

  • Resolve inability of rpc wallet to connect to daemon during large mempool
  • Examine why mempool sometimes prunes itself below the configured max weight
  • Large block propagation/verification speed benchmarking.
  • Practical performance eval for hardware and connection speeds

Acknowledgements

I want to give distinct recognition to Rucknium, whose efforts have been crucial in starting, operating, and continuing this endeavor. Thank you Rucknium!

More broadly, the success of the stressnet is the product of many participant's work. Node operators, testers of many kinds, and developers have all had an essential role in making the testing effective. Thank you everyone, we have already made a number of valuable contributions.

Given the success of the previous MAAMs (see here), let's keep this rolling.

The principle is simple: ask anything you'd like to know about Monero, especially the dumb questions that you've been keeping for you every other days, may the community clarify it all!

Finally, credits to binaryFate for starting the concept!

Haveno security (old.reddit.com)

I started to experiment with Haveno-reto and even if the learning curve is steep and it was not easy to get in, I kind of like it. I would prefer if there were more trades going on, but maybe that'll come later on.

My question is : what could prevent any arbitrator, or some arbitrators together, to create fake accounts and steal the deposit money / XMR? From what I understand you need 2/3 keys, and I did some research and from 1.0.6 on you can't choose the arbitrator, but what would prevent a couple of arbitrators to wait for their moment and steal everything at once by pretending to buy / sell and using the second key to take the money?

Simply trying to understand how it works.

Because, seriously, Monero needs an alternative to Local Monero and it needs to be resilient as hell. If the 3 letter agencies were able to shut down LM in a couple of weeks, it seems to me Haveno must be as strong if not stronger. On the surface it is stronger as it is more anonymous, but again, I just don't get, yet, what could prevent arbitrators to wait for their moment and create a big rug pulling.

The Haveno FAQ says that the colluding risk can be "solved" by "employing a small number of bonded arbitrators with strong operational security knowledge". Now, correct me if I am wrong, but since when a centralization problem is solved by... more centralization? Wouldn't that would be like saying, in 1917 after the Russian revolution, that there is a risk of a bloody dictatorship but it is "solved" because the Politburo is pretty "bonded" and they have "strong historical and political knowledge"? I mean : the fact that someone has "strong operational security knowledge" doesn't mean he could not pull the rug and steal deposit. Security knowledge says nothing about integrity, no more than political knowledge could have prevented Stalin from taking over the Politburo.

I like Haveno, really, but it seems to me this is a risk and I'd like to know what is the general opinion. It seems to me really weak to simply say that the colluding risk is "solved" because a couple of guys are bonded and work together. One could say that the less arbitrators there is and the more bonded they are, the bigger the risk of a major pull rugging event.

Not trying to make any FUD. I like Haveno. But I'd like to read what others have to say about this risk. I just don't see how having less arbitrators and having them more "bonded" lessen the risk. If Haveno becomes hugely popular then the risk would be huge as well because one could make a lot of money with a simple collusion scheme.

Does anyone know if there are currently any ongoing exploratory development initiatives to convert the monero network in the future into some kind of quantum-resistant algorithm instead of CryptoNote/RandomX?

This is more than likely far off, but with big academic and corporate labs seemingly growing the size of their quantum computers daily, the monero network might be seen as a good proof of concept for breaking conventional encryption

Here is a text written by someone on Twitter:

Dark Net Markets are the sole reason for Bitcoin's rise to prominence and foreshadow its downfall as a new money.

Bitcoin was once the main means of money on DNM’s for one sole reason:

People thought it was a novel peer-to-peer electronic cash system that would allow them a means of private, anonymous, and fungible financial exchange to make purchases of their choosing free of the scrutiny of authorities.

Because of this misunderstanding, people transacted, licitly or illicitly, under the false pretense of privacy and in turn were fined, arrested, or imprisoned for transactions that were fully transparent and incriminating.

As the vulnerability of Bitcoin being a transparent financial ledger that offers zero financial privacy, anonymity or fungibility became apparent to DNM users, its use dropped exponentially and is now rarely if ever intelligently used.

DNM’s are the purest testing ground for new technologies whether one likes that fact or not, for if the technology leads to incarceration it has to be abandoned for a superior alternative.

As DNM’s tinkered with new forms of peer-to-peer electronic cash to replace the fundamentally flawed Bitcoin, Bitcoin became mainstream through charismatic personalities and general zealotry.

Bitcoin failing to succeed in the most perfect test market for new money was either not understood by ignorant users or was swept under the rug from holders in order to make great sums of money from a simple currency arbitrage opportunity of fiat-Bitcoin, Bitcoin-fiat washing.

This combination of uneducated new Bitcoin enthusiasts and predatory currency arbitrage opportunists has created the present situation that is Bitcoin.

As the mainstream obsesses over the fundamentally flawed technology of Bitcoin under a type of hypnosis, DNM’s have adopted a technology in the wake of Bitcoin and its subsequent innovations:

Monero

Monero is a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that is anonymous, private, and fungible.

Plain, simple and perfectly executed in its design of providing these features by default, Monero is now the prescribed method of transacting on the markets.

DNM forums have created user guides and “bibles” stating that it is all that should be used and more commonly has to be used.

Monero is what people Bitcoin is and is proving this empirically in real time on DNM’s as the main and trusted means of exchange.

Bitcoin has concurrently become a scheme with one goal:

Convince people it’s a peer-to-peer censorship resistant electronic cash system in order to siphon fiat from a simple form of arbitrage. Rinse and repeat.

In reality it’s not what it’s being sold as and is actually antithetical to such properties.

Monero on the other hand is a technological marvel in way of money fixing not only the flaws of old money but also Bitcoin, it’s just not commonly understood.

The same markets that made Bitcoin famous have abandoned Bitcoin and they’ve abandoned it for Monero. This is beyond significant, it is an empirical example of the superior technology taking over in real time.

Underbelly markets make surface markets and surface markets are a reflection of underbelly markets, but with a lag of time and most importantly, understanding.

As above, so below.

As below, so above.

I'm having some problems with Haveno-reto, v. 1.0.8.

When starting it, I get this message :

And then I can't see any offer, and TOR isn't working, no green light at the bottom right and I see the message :

No seed nodes available.

I wanted to update to 1.0.9 but didn't see any easy way to do it (I'm on Linux XFCE). Is it a bug on 1.0.8? Or is it because I use a VPN?

Any help?

BTW, is Haveno better than bitpapa or payxful?

Still trying to figure it out.

Hello all,

I find Monero's development of a new full-chain signature FCMP++ extremely interesting. It is a replacement for the currently used CLSAG and, according to the FCMP++ specification, is mainly based on the recent cryptographic primitive called Curve Trees.

To my point of view, Curve Trees looks like a fundamental solution that, if successfully landed on Ed25519, can cover not only the need for an efficient signature but also in the long run other demands. However, there is still a question how long the full R&D+audit cycle can take.

Meanwhile, I'd like to say a word about an alternative signature idea from a 'different weight class'. It probably might be viewed as a minimalistic fallback or a temporary option for the case if the FCMP++ audit is expected to take a long time. Of course, I may not know many factors, anyway, I guess that knowing a possible alternative might be interesting to the Monero community.

I stress that my post is not about which signature is better, nor is my intention to undermine the development of FCMP++. It's just an announcement that there is another simple efficient ring signature scheme, albeit in the draft stage, that can also replace CLSAG.

The signature idea is called LS-LSAG and described in the draft at . It is built up only of those components that are currently used in Monero and handles Ed25519 in the same black-box way as CLSAG. The draft contains a description how all the three signatures, CLSAG, LS-LSAG, and FCMP++ can drop-in replace each other in an evolving system.

LS-LSAG works with key images that are currently in use in Monero, and also largely follows the existing CLSAG design. It just replaces the CLSAG linear-size proof with a log-size one. The cryptographic assumptions are the same, no trusted setup too.

Due to simplicity of the scheme, no batch optimization is foreseen at the moment, though. Anyway, the verification is not expected to be slower than for the linear-size scheme.

Unforgeability of LS-LSAG follows from the discrete-logarithm assumption and collision-resistance of the currently used hash-to-point function, there is a detailed sketch of a formal proof in the draft.

The LS-LSAG design allows variations. The presented version uses a number of helper generators which are sampled on-the-fly during signing-verification. A version having no generators sampled on-the-fly is also possible, it is quite similar, although requires a more complex unforgeability proof.

I was looking for a non-KYC swap site, after reading Changely's rules which say that they are likely to do enhanced due diligence on "customers requesting an exchange of untraceable cryptocurrencies", so trying to trade XMR is too risky as it looks like they'd just seize your coins if you can't or won't provide ID on demand.

StealthEX came up in a few lists as a supposed non-KYC site, but their KYC/AML rules are even worse than Changely's

MEXC is still an option to trade XMR if you already have an account, but if you create a new one it won't let you spot trade anything unless you verify your identity with photo ID first.

As you likely already heard, Protonmail has a new Bitcoin-only wallet that's essentially a war on monero, by calling everything else a "shitcoin" on twitter, and saying they don't support altcoins with privacy.

Companies like this need to be taught an economic lesson for alienating the real privacy community.. Stop or reduce using Protonmail, at least for paid plans, and self-host email. The cost of a tiny VPS is barely more than proton's plans.

If you're uninterested in reading technical docs, or have fears of spamlists, Simplified Privacy has VPS combo setups for Monero. We've teamed up with Kyun the XMR-focused provider, with us focusing on the Linux and DNS administration.

We’ll setup 3 services, (using open source software), on a single tiny VPS server for you:

  1. Email
  2. Chat
  3. Team cloud docs (like Google docs but encrypted) All for just a one-time .61 XMR setup fee.

We guarantee no spamlist or your money back. No KYC, get root access, and pay XMR. You’re also helping to fund our development of original open source software catered to the Monero community.

A group called "AntiDarknet" takes responsibility for recent spam on the Monero network. They used it to wreak havoc on DNMs and CSAM sites. This had the side-effect of improving Monero while taking down pedos, looks like a win-win to me.

From their site:

We are AntiDarknet. A collective dedicated to disrupt (darknet) operators and their websites - drug trades, illegal hacking, fraud, CP.

Philosophy

We believe darknet websites, groups or communities are a positive thing. However we don't agree on these websites spreading CP, human or animal abuse, facilitating heavy drug sales or other sub-human activities. The darknet is a way for people to express themselves and cultivate new ideas in anonymous way. Our belief is it should be done so without breaking the law or instances where the law needs changing, without human suffering.

More on our philosophy, goals and methodologies:

"Black Marble" attack

We did find the name "black marble" unfitting however we have accepted it and will refer it as such throughout the post/press release.

The attack was done in a very simplistic way and without much scripting.

All you had to do was use the official RPC to create ~200,000 accounts per wallet. Create 2 or 3 wallets each with 200K accounts. Start depositing money to each of these accounts in very small amounts. Wait some hours to have all of them verified.

Randomize sweeping the accounts or taking out a percentage from each account. Within a couple of minutes of doing that from multiple wallets and multiple accounts the Monero blockchain will clog up. Job done.

Funding

We want to express our gratitude to one of our core members who owns an exchange who loaned us the amount to execute the attack. We only had to pay around a huge ~$30,000 in fees~ and other misc expenses. A small price for double rewards.

The Result

Majority of active marketplaces were affected not due to "bug in monero RPC" as their incompetent admins claimed but due to the way they were coded to handle and verify sending out transactions. The delay in the network had the effect of delaying transactions meaning when they were not sent, they would repeat again and again and again until a hash or some other verification is acquired.

Really poor choice of coding practice and it only shows these darknet market admins are nothing more than inexperienced kids who lie to their customers. Lies which were also facilitated and repeated by "neutral" admins of big darknet discussion forum boards demonstrating their involvement in the deception "Everything is fine we only had a bug and lost your money move along..."

One strike resulting in an outstanding result for our goals accompanied by rewards.

Rewards

The first reward was we were able to reach one of our goals to completely dismantle a marketplace. Several markets suffered and some folded such as Cypher marketplace.

We were able to generate more than $300,000+ in "donations" to our cause. We wanted to thank in name the biggest donors to our campaign namely Incognito, Cypher, Super markets for the money. We say thank you and we are already using the money to cause further damage to your competitor operations as you have ceased to exist.

The Future

We will continue disrupting marketplaces one by one, forum by forum, service by service until their world unravels. Where Law Enforcement doesn't have jurisdiction we will step in. Where police can't identify we will seek. We will hack, DDoS and wreak chaos to the evil bastards.

Privacy and for freedom are important. But not at the cost of being complicit in for-crime operations such as those marketplaces. We sincerely hope the Monero developers patch the vulnerability and we apologise for the disruption to any legitimate users during and now as a result of dropping this zero-day.
