Now bombard senators and reps about Palestine, the global South, Africa, Asia, and domestically, rent caps, grocery caps, single payer, comprehensive health, living wages, safe working and living conditions, fossil fuels, climate extinction, taxing TF out of the ultrawealthy and mega corps, chemicals out of food, water, air...

[-] otp@sh.itjust.works 51 points 1 week ago

"What about" is a fantastic way to breed apathy when people are protesting something. You're doing nothing for any of those causes with this comment. You're making things worse for all of those causes, plus the one this post is about. And your comment only tangentially relates to the Community this post is in...

But how can I be expected to sign the SKG petition, while people in West Sahara live under Morocco’s unjust occupation?

Tap for spoiler\s

[-] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 week ago

SKG is privileged western bullshit. It is a way to distract from real issues while feeling like you had an impact on something.

I just happen to have the foresight to know that 20 years from now it will sound stupid to brag that I helped change some obscure game development process for a tiny bit more convenience.

This is all absurd and a waste of time, but whatever makes people feel useful I guess.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Oh no! All the real issues would hang been solved if only I hadn't taken 5 whole minutes to sign a petition for SKG!

[-] KumaSudosa@feddit.dk 0 points 1 week ago

What is wrong with that? It's not like actual democracies are a thing. The elites somewhat allow us to decide on "Western bullshit" topics such as killing games, gendered bathrooms, national dishes, and other issues that don't affect their bottom lines. They don't allow us to influence geopolitics. Sure you can yell about freeing Congo, and it should be.. but ehh, if some people care about stop killing games then whatever. Anything positive is something - and I don't even really play video games or care about this thing.

[-] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 week ago

What people care about is literally the whole ball game.

[-] CatDogL0ver@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

You have underestimated the power of porn games. The rest of the things you complain are not comparable as "How to get an A from your professor - sorority party edition" (coming to iOS and Android).

[-] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

That's also why in the middle of the previous century propaganda was mostly aimed at women. That's killing two birds with one stone.

[-] Gsus4@mander.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

Everyone has their path into activism and politicization. Last time this happened was when wikileaks got blocked by visa/mastercard, next time, with this experience it may be one of those causes.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Yeah they're starting with something that hit close to home without feeling like they'll get disappeared or ignored.

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

There's always a gap between "Someone should do something about this" and "I should do something about this".

Once that line gets crossed, plans like OP's post start.

[-] Blackdoomax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

It's somebody else's problem.

[-] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 week ago

Comparing blocking payment to wikileaks and blocking payment for porn video games is absurd. Is nuance dead?

[-] KumaSudosa@feddit.dk 0 points 1 week ago

It's the slowly boiling water, mate. You think governments give a fuck whether some neckbeards play incest video games in their mum's basement? It's about power and expanding the reach of what they can monitor and control. One day it's porn games the next day it's books. It's a tiny step towards a more and more authoritarian world.

[-] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 week ago

This has nothing to do with government, its a business decision. How do you make sense of anything you just posted?

[-] KumaSudosa@feddit.dk 0 points 1 week ago

It's not just a "business decision". It's about control and they're connected. You're naive if you don't see the bigger picture

[-] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

What do those have to do with my video games?? I just wanna ~~grill~~ game!

[-] PunnyName@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Chemicals in food and water? You think you can live without chemicals?

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Mate, some of my relatives are made of chemicals

[-] SheeEttin@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago
[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I can't say for sure.

After the first one, it has become much harder to get core samples.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago

Hell, internet chemist here, I can say with certainty that they is chemicals...

Unless you're a family with a free energy being background?

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Given the reactions at Thanksgiving, I think some may be antimatter

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth -3 points 1 week ago

Please. You should know what I mean.

[-] PunnyName@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Considering that "chemicals" is such a loaded word now with ignorant and dangerous people like RFK Jr in positions of power, maybe get specific.

[-] northendtrooper@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

honestly there needs to be a git project that I can clone that uses a local LLM to auto call all of the senators, congressmen, reps, whoever. Also call all of the visa/mastercard callcenters non stop. And I mean non stop. Bonus points to use public figure voices. As in use AI to do our bidding.

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

https://github.com/vndee/local-talking-llm

Seems like it would be a good place to start. You'd need to write the bit in order to send the output to a voip service and receive the input from the same service.

If you could get that going in a container you could spawn a bunch of them on VPSs (finding ones that have the hardware to run local AI would probably be expensive, probably better to use a hosting service if you're going to scale this).

I'm sure there are more conversation agent frameworks that people have built (it's a pretty simple loop to create), but if you wanted to get started this isn't bad.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth -2 points 1 week ago

It's already here, so...

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

The person who made the image had a cause they cared about and did something about it. If you care about those causes you should absolutely do the same.

Otherwise you just sound like you're lashing out at people who are doing something about something, while you are doing nothing about anything.

By the way, how many of those causes have you called your representative about?

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth -1 points 1 week ago

I'm active in my community and I'm sure my congressional representatives wish I'd move, as the ones I had prior.

It's odd how so many are quick to add their personal interpretations.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

It's odd how so many are quick to add their personal interpretations.

Right, it's not like that's what you immediately did in your first comment.

You also didn't answer the question as to how many of those causes you called your representatives about.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth -1 points 1 week ago

I asked that people be as passionate for things I've mentioned. Any one will do.

Every. Single. Issue.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

I asked that people be as passionate for things I've mentioned.

No, you didn't. You've bombarded them with a long list of "whatabouts" that is only going to exhaust them, not move them to action.

Getting downvoted for wanting people to advocate for better living conditions, way to go .world!

Edit: Sorry for wanting people to advocate for better things, glad to know that's too much to ask.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 1 week ago

Our priorities are showing.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago

It's amazing that you posted this after having a fairly good explanation as to why it's not a good idea to conflate too many things together.

If you string too many things to a cause you dilute all of them. Especially because MasterCard and Visa have nothing to do with what's happening in Palestine so linking the two causes together just weakens both of them.

[-] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 week ago

but Maeve said to call the senators about these, not mastercard. and you don't need to call them about all of these topics at once either.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

But the Visa thing is an international issue that can be dealt with by contacting Visa. They're talking about contacting US senators, which is obviously not an international thing, it's an American thing. I know a lot of Americans have difficulty understanding that America doesn't equal the whole world, but come on.

Go do that too but don't try and link it to this because it's not even remotely related.

[-] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 week ago

I don't see how that makes the same method unsuitable. and no, I'm not an American, and I never have been there.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

It makes a difference because it's about having an effect.

American politics is really fucked, seriously it's utterly beyond repair it's totally corrupt. No one can achieve anything in that failure of a nation state.

Meanwhile we might actually be able to affect real political change here and I don't want American politics all over an actual worthwhile cause.

If you want to advocate for American causes please go create your own goddamn thread, I promise not to involved in it.
