TIL there's a new Carmageddon.
For anyone who didn't grow up in the 90s: Carmageddon was a PC game where you could win races by completing checkpoints (the traditional way), by wrecking all the other cars (the fun way), or by killing all 400+ pedestrians (the psychotic way). The game was heavily criticised when it was new, and console gamers got the kid-friendly version, Twisted Metal. Which was fun too, more of like a demolition derby where the only point was to wreck all the other cars, and it had funny and cool back stories (I played the demon who wanted to go back to Hell, and his victory sent him to Hell, Michigan, where he froze his arse off), but listening to the. same. fucking. Rob. Zombie. Song. Over. And. Fucking. Over. got really old, really fast. I liked Dragula (the song in question) before I started playing Twisted Metal. I have not listened to it since. (Same with Last Surprise from Persona 5, aka the song that plays during every fight.)
Anyway, Carmageddon was cool, it was a classic, and it's been ported to everything, including Android and iOS. Carmageddon 2 was kinda bad, and we really don't talk about the third one. These games generally don't get talked about because they're too violent. I felt like the first one had Mario Kart replayability and fun. Like you could get powerups like Solid Granite Car and Pinball Mode that do exactly what you think they do. The final race was held on the rooftops of the city from the first race, with ramps letting you jump from building to building. And there were a few car parks where you could get from the streets to the rooftops if you fell, and I don't know of anyone who ever actually completed the race itself.
I watched the trailer for the new one. It looks fine, looks like they got around censorship by replacing the pedestrians with zombies. Kind of a drag (zombies has been stale for years) but the game looks fun.
I remember playing Carmageddon (not sure if it was 1 or 2). But iirc, killing pedestrians would reduce your credits, which were required to repair your car.
