Should they have removed them?

If we take the picture at its word it's not unreasonable they got a cup (or whatever) of water and took it over to the "pills". When they took a second picture because they didn't know what was going on (as is often the case with humans encountering an unexpected result) they still would have been in the background.

What about them being in the shot is unrealistic?
