Hi comrades and welcome to the second weekly improvement megathread!

I am glad to see that there was a lot of engagement in the first megathread and that people were checking in throughout the week.

Same as the last week, here are some ideas for discussion:

  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • What would you like to do next week?
  • What aspect of life would you like to improve?
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Good luck to everybody with your goals! unity

Not sure if I'm making the best choice, but I'm returning to college to finish the CS degree I started. If STEM is what the market wants so badly, then STEM is what the market gets. It sucks I need to slog through all this time and money literally for society's permission to work, but the only actual alternative I see is me rotting as a NEET forever in my second best case scenario (my best case scenario is I make money as an artist, but I'd rather be an artist with 'marketable hard skills'). I also hope to learn how to "network" and set myself up for being an actual adult. In a sense, this is adult boot camp. Most importantly of all, I want to make friends and find a GF, I cannot see myself resorting to apps for such things. Plus it will set me up for grad opportunities that are more aligned with my interest if need be, I'm going for a job I can tolerate doing but find meaning outside of it with the friends I make and hobbies. I want to change for the better, and I have a habit of trying, getting burnt out, and failing. Regardless, I know I can't do this while I'm living the life of a manchild.

Also, I had a pretty good day in the gym, my bench is up and I hope to be able to bench 225 by the end of the year. Exercising has made me realize my music taste sucks so hard, I'm a total neckbeard that listens to video game soundtracks unironically. Can anyone recommend some good "normal people" music that's great for working out?

There are some great video game soundtracks, there's no shame in listening to that. I don't listen to music when working out but if I did, I would probably listen to something like Rage Against The Machine.

Congrats on returning back to college! Good luck with your studies

Self Improvement

260 readers
19 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
