Good morning hockey fans! It's still a good bit before pre-season, but I've been working on a bot for the flyers community and would like some feedback on what everyone would find useful. Based on tests it should be ready to go once pre-season rolls around. It pull stats/standings /live scores at the moment. If there's other features (or more information you would like to see on the existing ones), please let me know so I can make sure to have it finished before the start of the season!

I'd also love feedback from any community mods that want to use the bot for any way to make it easier for you to do so! Right now it can be installed through python's pip command or through docker

Discuss this free agents crop, what you think about how your team is doing, the trades, etc.

So 2023 NHL draft is over

from a #LGRW POV i'm not sold 100% on either top 2 picks more so with Danielson, i think Benson would have been a better choice. Sandin Pellika was the top D still there so i can go with the Swedes pick more

These 2 choices Imo put more pressure on Yzerman to land a top 2 C by way of a trade + sealing the DeBrincat deal given Detroit's piss poor luck in getting top end franchise players from successive draft lotteries other teams walk away with guys to run their top lines offensively

The lower round picks bar Trey Augustine & Noah Dower-Nilsson were odd where the focus on big defensive D seemed to be the norm typified by Brady Cleveland

I still get the Yzerplan but really it's a kinda meh draft given the lack of scoring the team has, maybe Yzerman has decided he can't get that talent via the draft

Back in 2016, two trades happened that seemed like seismic events in the NHL that... never really impacted any of the teams involved in the way that they thought it would:

  • PK Subban is traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Shea Weber
  • Taylor Hall is traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Adam Larsson

At the time, these felt like franchise defining moves that would have immediate impacts, but ultimately didn't really move the needle in any significant way.

  • Taylor Hall wont a Hart and helped the Devils get to the playoffs for the first time in six years, but then missed the playoffs for the next two and was traded to Arizona in 2019 for Kevin Bahl, Nick Merkley, Nate Schnarr, and the pick that NJ used to get Dawson Mercer
  • Adam Larsson did help the Oilers on defense, but ultimately never got farther than the 2nd round with Edmonton. He was taken by Seattle in the 2021 expansion draft
  • PK helped Nashville make the Stanley Cup finals his first year with his new club, but fell short of winning it all, losing to the Penguins in six games. He was traded to New Jersey in 2019 to free up cap space.
  • Shea Weber's time in Montreal was plagued by injury. He did help the Habs to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in nearly 30 years with their Cinderella run in the 2021 playoffs, but lost the series in five games. Weber has been LITRetired ever since that run.

How did you guys feel about those trades when they happened? Ambivalence? Excitement?

Well I'm a bit late on the draw on this, but link above is a runnable python script for the draft that autoupdates once per minute. Will need to install plemmy extension (pip install plemmy). It will prompt for your server, community name, username/password then get to work posting a post titled "2023 draft" and updating it once per minute.

**It does not know how to tell when the draft is over, you will need to stop it manually (ctr+c on linux/unix). **

Been working on this as the draft was happening, I'll be hoping to get that figured out soon.

can see here to see it in action

nhl score bot (github.com)

cross-posted from: https://midwest.social/post/865159

I've started work on a lemmybot that can be run using python to automatically run a score-tracker in a post! There's still some work to go to make it more user friendly but getting the link out early. There will be a few updates to the script to cache some information and to make it easier to pick the team without needing the teamID from the nhl api prior to the preseason.

If anyone who codes wants to help I'll also gladly merge pull requests as they come in.
