Hi there

I would like to prevent to the best of my ability getting malware or virus when torrenting. I know there is never 100% certainty of not getting one, but i'd like to mitigate it. I'd like to ask your advice/expertise.

These are the practices I use. Please build on them if you think there is room for improvement and how.

  • First off, I use linux (transmission) and only download media (music, movies), no software. I know this already lowers the risks significantly since most malware are on .exe for Windows, however I am aware mp3/mp4 and mkv files can still embed malware to exploit VLC vulnerabilities and also Linux.

  • I use Proton VPN with kill switch in advanced settings - no internet (at all) allowed when the VPN is not connected.

  • I limit opening the downloaded media in the PC. After seeding for a few months, I usually transfer them into an external HDD and delete them from the PC. Media may be used in a TV/phone for viewing/listening.

  • I have downloaded torrent media going into a separate internal SSD which is encrypted (obviously unencrypted when torrenting). This probably doesn't do much, but I get somewhat piece of mind when I am not torrenting and the ssd is locked.

  • I use normally pirate bay org and get the torrents with the higher number of seeds.

I understood joining some private tracker may help, but I found it difficult to join. Any advice and recommendations are welcome!

Bitmagnet, thoughts ? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) by x550@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

Anyone using it ?

I'm considering it for a future system to sidestep the cloudflare bs with the *arr stack. I dont want to use flarsolverr as it just moves the problem to a different place. We can change urls for now and indexers but long term cloudflare is a problem.

I've been looking into local dht database to address this.

Im curious to hear your experiences with bitmagnet , magnetico or if you are doing something else.

Do you clean the db to certain media types or only have actively seeded content ?

Hey, long time lurker on lemmy but I have never posted before. I just wanted to express my gratitude to the piracy community for the contributions, philosophy, and megathread which have been extremely consequential in my life. I started my piracy journey about a year and a half ago. I was a broke asf student living off of loans in low income housing with my partner. I watched over the years as the world changed from blockbuster to streaming to everything becoming a subscription. I saw what everyone else was seeing, the transition to rentier capitalism, to a world where everything is a subscription and we own nothing and are expected to be happy. I, the same as all of you, thoroughly reject that notion. You can hardly even buy a dvd anymore, and even if you do, it is expected that you forgoe the convinience of streaming media. I had already been pirating textbooks for years at that point like many of my fellow students, but I started becoming anxious that I would loose access to my favourite shows, movies, and video games. I think the high prices of retro games and not being able to watch pokemon on one streaming service got to me, and then there was that whole always online thing with the crew game and the stop killing games movement. I was done, so I came here. I started off with just a couple of games and movies, but then I decided I wanted my own personal library. I have purchased several harddrives and I store all my games, movies, shows, and books on my harddrives and stream what I can using Jellyfin. I used to think that technology was bad, that it was something that stole your attention span, but ever since I started pirating, I feel like that sense of independence around technology has taken a hold of me. I idealize a world where we all share software for free, media is made for the love of the art, and we don't pay obscene amounts of money for media that we already own. It is my hope to continue expanding my knowledge of computers, and continue to make them work for me rather than the other way around. I am especially excited now that I completed my degree that I can focus on learning about computers more as a hobby. This community has inspired me to take technology into my own hands and I just wanted to express my gratitude for all the good that this community does.

I Love Sideloading (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

TLDR: I love sideloaded apps and they r a godsend

So I’ve been using sideloaded yt and Spotify and now I can NEVER go back. Makes me feel like a PEASANT if I do.

So a couple weeks ago I went on a 4 hour drive and sadly my sidestore time expired and I couldn’t renew due to ap ID it so I had to wait a week and by the time I would drive another 4 hours back. And let me tell you FREE SPOTIFY SUCKS ASS. I can’t go back or scrub through the songs, I can only do 6 skips per hour and replay COUNTS AS THE 6, luckily I use a vpn which blocked other company ads but SPOTIFY HAS THEIR OWN DAMN STUPID ADS EVERY 3 SONGS. And I couldn’t add songs to queue by swiping and I had to tap on the three dots and add to queue which I can’t do while on the highway. And of course I can’t play a specific song, I can’t even decide whether I want shuffle or not. And I didn’t even wanna try yt with no playing off the app or while the phone is off.

It’s as if getting into sideloading, piracy, and modding made me feel true online freedom and I can’t wait or imagine the feeling I’m going to have when I start self hosting. I’m definitely going to donate to these projects due to the improvement in my life they contributed to.

I was testing two different online subtitle converters Subtitle Tools & Sub Extractor on a file I had torrented. I was converting the .sup (original BluRay sub) to .srt to see how accurate they both could convert to English.

Although the filename was not very clear it was a torrented file, I'm concerned about the possibility of being reported by Sub Extractor who does have a User Content policy stating:

"You retain ownership of any videos, text, or other content ("User Content") you upload or create using our Services. By uploading User Content, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to process, store, and use your User Content solely to provide and improve the Services (e.g., extracting subtitles, transcribing audio, converting formats, or enabling subtitle editing).

You are solely responsible for ensuring that your User Content:

Does not infringe on any third-party intellectual property rights, including copyrights, trademarks, or patents.", etc.

Do you think I have anything to worry about? And, if not, do you think it would be safe to use the service through a VPN so they cannot track my location. That is, unless they require payment. Thanks for any and all relevant input!

Hey everyone.

Government of Türkiye is pushing a new regulation that would force Steam, Epic, PlayStation etc. to appoint local representatives. If they refuse? The whole platform gets banned.

They also want full access to user data and the power to arbitrarily ban "risky" content. This isn't just a Turkish thing, governments everywhere are trying to pull this crap. They think blocking platforms will control us? All they are doing is driving people straight to VPNs and piracy. If you make it impossible to buy games legally, we'll just sail the high seas for free.

Thanks for the boost, I guess.

After the codeberg repo was taken down that a lot of people used to use, I wanted to let people know of another one that has popped up.

Enjoy!

This might not be entirely on topic, but I think someone here will know the answer.

Does anyone have a working setup for streaming from jellyfin to an OLED TV (preferably LG) that supports Dolby Vision? AFAICT every device in the chain (except the server) needs to be DV-licensed.

Apparently KODI on a linux box (my current setup) cannot output DV content over HDMI.

I'm wondering if LG's native OS has a Jellyfin client that supports DV well. It's either that or:

  • Apple TV + infuse client (expensive)
  • Google TV Streamer

Is there any way to pirate premium WordPress plugins and minimizing the chance of getting malware? Meaning perhaps there are certain sources that are known to provide malware free content and generally have a good reputation. I know piracy will always involve risks but it doesn't hurt to ask people with first-hand experience. I am even willing to pay but there's no way I will afford plugins that cost hundreds of dollars a year anytime soon.

With the launch of optical media in game consoles such as the Sony PlayStation 1. The console could be hacked with a use of a simple modchip - an unauthorized hardware modification that was soldered directly onto the motherboard. This was done to circumvent security features. While the original goal was for piracy and backups, as modchips evolved, so did their use cases. Everything from Region Free, homebrew, emulators, makeshift development kits and more were soon possible. In today's video we look at the earliest modchips and how they shaped the video game landscape.

Of course most of the events I'm interested in are broadcast at ridiculous times of day, which makes sense given the time difference. Does anyone know where a guy might find recordings, or at least a livestream? FMHY has lots of TV links, I'm sure I'll be able to find some stuff there, but I'm hopeful that somebody more intelligent than I am is also interested and has a better plan than I do.

Sidenote: what events are y'all looking forward to? I'm excited about Ski Mountaineering, and I think there's a Freeride Ski event as well!

Edit: I understand that some folks have strong opinions about the Olympics, and that's alright. However, I wasn't asking for your opinion on the event in a political manner, and outside of "what events are you looking forward to?" did not ask for any opinion whatsoever. I am interested in watching them, and am looking for the best ways to do so without paying. That doesn't effect you, and frankly your opinion of the event is unwelcome and irrelevant to the conversation at hand.

If you want to have a discussion about all of the ills involved with the Olympics, make a thread about that, in a relevant community. I agree with a lot of the negative opinions about the Games and would happily engage in that conversation in the appropriate context. This thread is about where those of us who do chose to watch may do so. Thank you in advance for stowing your opinion.

Another Edit: regarding representing your nation, that isn't incorrect, but also absolutely minimizes that making it to the Olympics is the height of athletic achievement and many of the athletes dedicated their entire lives in order to reach that point. And you're shitting on that from behind a computer. Younger me was a very competitive skier, I nearly went to college explicitly for ski racing. So I have in that regard a pretty deep understanding of the level of commitment it takes to go beyond that level. It's nothing to snear at and say "well your president/PM/government is bad so you're as guilty as they are" and doing so reflects more on you than the athlete.

Jadoo TV, once one of the most prominent providers of pirated South Asian content to global audiences, has permanently ceased operations worldwide. Its downfall follows a December 2024 court ruling that issued a final judgment of $24,969,911 and a permanent injunction against both Jadoo TV and its US-based CEO, Sajid Sohail.

So, there was a "spotify hack" recently, from Anna's Archive, as we all know. My question is:

  • Has the songs from that hack been made available? Can one easily get these songs? Say, I want song X from artist Y. Can I search and download?

I am searching dor some form of software that I can use to watch all the different media I have stored locally, similar to Jellyfin. However the Problem is, that I do not have a dedicated media server (yet), so I am searching for something that I can use like Jellyfin, but that just runs locally. Everything that I have found is aimed at media servers. Do you have any suggestions?
