Info:

In 2022, Gwent Police introduced four electric tuk-tuks to enhance community safety in Newport and Abergavenny, Wales. Funded by the Home Office’s Safer Streets programme, these vehicles act as mobile “safe spaces” where residents can report incidents, seek assistance, or receive crime prevention advice, especially in public areas like parks and walkways.

The initiative has garnered 'positive feedback', with parents and women reporting feeling 'safer'—particularly at night—due to the increased visibility and accessibility of police support.

Despite the 'positive' reception, the tuk-tuks have faced criticism over their cost and practicality. Priced at £9,936 each, the total £39,744 investment has sparked debate about government funding priorities, with critics suggesting the money could have bolstered traditional policing resources instead.

Furthermore, their limited speed (under 35mph) and three-wheeled design raise questions about their effectiveness for tasks like high speed pursuits or navigating challenging terrain, highlighting a broader discussion on balancing 'innovative' (stupid) approaches with practical law enforcement needs.

Info:

The Reyonnah A175 Roadster was developed by Robert Hannoyer in the late 1940s, during a period of post-World War II austerity when small, fuel-efficient vehicles were in demand. The car, named after an anagram of Hannoyer’s surname, debuted at the 1950 Paris Motor Show, receiving positive press and generating orders.

However, despite initial interest, mass production did not materialize, and only about 16 units were built between 1951 and 1954. The car participated in various events, including setting speed records at Montlhéry and appearing in concours d’élégance, but logistical challenges and lack of support from major automakers limited its production.

The Urbanina was a pioneering electric microcar produced in Italy from 1964 to 1973. Designed by Marquis Pier Girolamo Bargagli Bardi Bandini and Narciso Cristiani in an 18th-century villa in the Tuscan countryside, it aimed to provide a compact, zero-emission vehicle for urban mobility.

It was showcased at the Turin Motor Show in 1965 and 1966, with a patent granted in 1977. Despite initial plans for mass production and thousands of reported orders, only a few units were built due to technological constraints, such as limited battery and electronic capabilities, and low environmental awareness at the time.

Production ceased in the early 1970s, and the project was sold to Zagato, which repurposed it into the Zele model, later exported to the U.S. as the Elcar 1000.

[REAL, 1993] The Mosler Raptor (upload.wikimedia.org)
submitted 11 months ago by Hubi@lemmy.world to c/weirdwheels@lemmy.world

In 1993, Consulier Industries spun off their automotive division into Mosler Automotive, which focused on high-performance cars. Mosler introduced the Intruder, an updated GTP with a new 300 hp (220 kW) Corvette LT1 V8 engine modified by Lingenfelter. This car raced at the Longest Day of Nelson 24-hour race in 1993 and 1994, winning both years; like the GTP before it the Intruder was also banned from Nelson Ledges after its dominating 1993–1994 performances. In 1996, a 450 hp (340 kW) Lingenfelter Intruder won Car and Driver magazine's One Lap of America.

Of the four Intruders built, just one was sold. Another was converted into a GT1 racing car, while the remaining pair were converted into Raptors.

In 1997, the Intruder was renamed Raptor after being updated with a V-shaped split windshield that reduced drag.

The Sachsenring P 240 "Repräsentant" was based on the Horch P 240, a luxury car built in East Germany. Five cabriolets were built in celebration of "20 Years of GDR" in 1969 and used for military parades.

Info: There is not a lot known about the Manocar from Saint-Ouen near Paris, which was developed by the manufacturer Manom.

The single front wheel and the rear wheels were fitted on swingaxles with typically French rubber band suspension.

The body without doors was similar to the "Brutsch Mopetta" in overall design, but rather larger. It was advertised as bridging the gap between car and scooter.

This 2-seat vehicle had a 125 cc 2-stroke engine that drove power to the front wheel via a chain. Only two pre-production cars were made once the project was cancelled.

Formerly used as a snow plow for the Marburg fire department, the local police bought the shortened VW T1 Bus to save it from the crusher. "Speedy" fits up to 10 people and is mostly used for public events and shows.

Source (video 17min): Building an omniwheel bike using hoverboard parts - James Bruton (YouTube)

I love riding hoverboards, so I decided to see if we could use the electronics and wheels from one to make a bigger balancing omni-directional vehicle. Other channels have attempted this, but generally they just made the wheels bigger which result in more velocity and less torque than the hoverboard controller is expecting. I solved this by matching the wheel velocity with the correct belt ratio. In Part 2 I'll be putting thrusters on to make to go forward too!

Bike seen on 1985 Raleigh Vektar (r/RetroFuturism)

Some info from The Raleigh Vektar | The Bike Comes First:

The Vektar, the worlds first computer bike, was launched in 1985 long before we had health and safety laws. Equipped with ‘micro chip technology’ the rider could see how fast they were going, how far they had gone and how long they had been riding for at the touch of a button. The head’s down display ensured that you would ride into the back of your mate or a kerb as you fiddled with the control panel.

If that wasn’t enough you could listen to the radio on one of the three AM preset stations either while riding the bike or parked up hanging out with their pals. Later models came with a MW tuner giving even less crappy sound quality.

The main feature though was the advanced warning and alarm system. Once you had chosen one of the eight sounds from the ‘revolutionary sound generator’ on the top tube mounted control panel, you could use the handlebar mounted controller to terrorise old ladies as you rallied around the housing estate.
