Is there a fediverse tool to replace something like discogs? I know there is BookWyrm for books, but is there anything kind of like that for music collections? I've tried googling and haven't found anything. Thanks!

I'd love to find something like this for movies as well.

Definitely. I have been transferring my stuff over from IMDb to Trakt (it plays nicer with Kodi). I've put a lot of time and effort into IMDb over the years but it just feels terribly clunky with minimal investment in it, despite being owned by Amazon, which is a big issue (as it is with Goodreads, but we have BookWyrm now and I am transferring over to that).

To keep everything joined up, here's my thoughts from the other thread:

I think we are reaching the point we can have a Fediverse Rule 23 - if you think "what about a Fediverse version of this?" then someone is working on it.

A couple of years ago, someone floated the idea of a Fediverse IMDb probably based on a fork of BookWyrm. Apparently, according to the comments there, it is possible but the idea doesn't seem to have got any traction as I think the BookWyrm developers had their hands full.

So it does seem like it would be possible to fork BookWyrm for records (DiscWyrm?) but getting enough people interested might be tricky.

As suggested over there, it might also be beneficial to make a fork of BookWyrm more modular, so people could then slot in the sources they wanted to use and spin off a database for films, records, comics (I still mourn the loss of comicbookdb), action figures, etc, etc. GeneralWyrm? BaseWyrm? WyrmCore? WyrmHub?

Doing that might take a little longer but would then make creating new applications much quicker and easier.

So, yes, a Fediverse or Discogs or IMDb service would be great but a more generic base that could be adapted for all sorts of databases seems a more exciting possibility. I'm also a bit tickled by the image of a worm in a general's uniform.

edit: there's more general discussion of creating a general database system here.

Had been looking for that for years, built my own now. Very basic in php (which I can't code) but has all the info I want (media/artist/track/charts etc)

I can to some modest degree (not done any in a while) and that's very impressive considering you can't code in PHP.

I got an example from someone and did a lot of copy/paste. I can read it, and then guess/google if I need something.

Funkwhale is the only music related one I'm aware of, but it's not what you're after.

Just curious - what's wrong with Discogs? Is it just that it's centralized?

I suspect that once you have the Fediverse bug, you want everything federated. BookWyrm has demonstrated that this works well and that has got a lot of minds racing trying to figure out what else this can be applied to. While Discogs doesn't have the level of issues Goodreads or IMDb have, it is popular and seems like a prime candidate for the same kind of treatment.

All you need is someone to add activity pub to one of these apps:
