I didn't think I'd spend hours reading about this today, but some things surprised me:

  1. Just using a Playstation sounds like it won't work or will be a huge time sink.
  2. Blu ray optical drives are way more expensive than I thought
  3. The copy protections on Blu rays are exceptionally annoying, to the extent where there is really only one closed source software -- MakeMKV -- that can work around them. This post goes into some interesting details.
  4. Finding a drive that is known to work with MakeMKV is a pain. There's a brand called Pioneer that seems promising but they have stopped producing bluray drives ~~went out of business last year~~. I have no idea which model works, and it's common that secondhand sellers will swap enclosures and pass it off as a different model.
  5. Sometimes you need to flash the firmware on the drive to make it work with 4K UHD discs.

I was going to try ripping a Blu-ray that I bought recently, since I couldn't find a quality rip anywhere, but I'm pretty turned off from the whole prospect at this point.

Anyway I'm not really asking for a specific reply, I just thought this topic was interesting and I'm curious what people think about Blu rays and optical media in general. Does the future seem bleak? Are we going to be stuck with shitty WebDLs for most new content? Or is physical media here to stay?

Firefox Account (sh.itjust.works)

Maybe a silly question - but is it unwise to use Firefox for getting torrents, or saving any bookmarks in firefox? Is there benefit to using a private window (doubtful as I believe this only affects your device).

I know we generally can trust Firefox but they could turn quickly.

For holiday gift I was thinking of making USB/microSDs full of TV/movies. The intended recipients are not tech savvy types. They would be using windows computers, normal TVs etc.

What kind of file formats/encodings would be good to package the files in? What is safe and universally usable? And which ones are to be avoided? I'd like to guarentee they'll play without any fooling around with drivers or software.

And I want them to be as small as possible so that I can fit more stuff.

I recently wanted to watch something a film and went to one of the first two sites listed on the Reddit's r/Piracy mega thread under it's online streaming section. I normally use an older laptop that I don't care about and have no sensitive info on but wanted to stream to a projector and only my personal laptop had an hdmi port.

I downloaded firefox exclusively to use for piracy streaming but initially forgot to add ublock origin or another AV extension to the browser. When clicking anywhere on the site, a new tab would open that I'd need to close before I could actually engage with the website content (search, play, etc), which had been my experience in the past using online streaming sites. Once, one of the popup tabs opened and immediately started a file download without my permission. I didn't open it and deleted it immediately but have recently been noticing some performance issues on my device Mostly that web pages and their content are slower to load than before and my computer has gotten overwhelmed and frozen a few times - not extremely substantially but enough that I've noticed a difference.

For context: I have a ThinkPad with windows 10 installed and an Intel i5 CPU. My default browser has been Opera for a few months now.

I just checked and the compressed zip file is in my recycling bin (not fully off my computer) and I'm not sure if/how it can affect my device without me ever opening or running its contents. I don't have an antivirus background process on my device aside from the default Microsoft Defender Antivirus that comes with Windows 10.

Is there possibly somewhere I could upload the file to check for malware/scan the file to know what it does (titled "XVlDEOSs_Elena_Frost_IMG_223606" - searching for that title didn't match anything on google)? Is there any chance the file is benign and the performance issues I'm noticing are unrelated to this situation?

TLDR: How concerned should I be about the possibility of a virus on my device from a popup window automatically downloading a zip file I never opened?

Would reinstalling my OS be the main/only possible resolution to a potential virus/worm/malware? I'd really like to avoid that if possible but many of the articles/info I can find about it have inconsistent info about risk and steps to take for resolution. I don't know much about what kinds of risks I might've exposed my computer to. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Using this userscript I made : git.kaki87.net/KaKi87/userscripts/protonmailWithoutAnnoyances

ProtonMail allows scheduling and snoozing messages for free at preset times, e.g. tomorrow, next Monday, this weekend, etc., and always at 8, but makes people pay to choose a customized date and time.

I had a hunch that this restriction might only be implemented client-side, so I tried modifying the value in DevTools for the first time, and I couldn't believe it : that worked !

So, in order to automate this, I created a userscript that replaces the button press handler for the "custom" option, then lets you input whatever value you need, e.g. (next) Wednesday, (in) 30 minutes, (today at) 8 PM, Thursday at 7 (AM), etc.

Then, it lets the app believe that we're gonna schedule using the tomorrow preset, until it intercepts the request and swaps the time value with the user's choice.

Enjoy !

They are not on Anna's Archive or on MaM. They are available for digital purchase from SpringerPub or Amazon.

Is there a different tracker for textbooks and reference materials?

How likely is it that a request will be fulfilled. Would someone need to buy the book themself and upload it?

Is there any reason NOT to switch to ProtonVPN from Mullvad?

Use cases: privacy, torrenting without getting a DMCA letter.

OSs: Linux, Mac.

I know there was a reason I didn't pick up Proton years ago when PIA got bought by Kape but I don't remember what it was. I'd read something on /r/VPNTorrents but that place has since been banned so I can't refer to it again.

Japanese novels? (programming.dev)

Struggling to find a particular book. I was going to buy it on Rakuten Kobo, but they literally won't sell it if you're not in Japan.

NXBrew status on the list? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

So, I've done as usual and went through the megathread looking for the stuff I need. Since nsw2u has been taken down, I hadn't downloaded any Switch games, and tried out grabbing Metroid Dread on NXBrew since it was tagged as GOAT. Unfortunately, when I tried downloading from there, their link redirector sent me into fucking limbo and hit me with a Trojan, that I swiftly removed.

So, should that website's status still be rated that high? I couldn't reach any of their actual downloads, since they all go through the same shitty redirector.

I made this userscript to play multiple videos from pirate streaming sites in sync (play/pause them at the same time)

usecase: You want to watch dubbed version of a movie (most people here probably watch in english, but may have friends or family members who don't). You find dubbed version, but in poor quality. Finding high quality english version is easy. You play the english version muted in foreground, and the dubbed version with audio in the background. With this userscript, you can play or pause them at the same time.

Not sure if anyone else finds it useful, but it' super useful for me, so I figured I'll share it here.

Recently I learned a reason the most popular BitTorrent Index is still online is because of cloudflare and easydns.com

https://who.is/whois/thepiratebay.org

Obviously cloudflare could never host the site, it probably redirects the users to the servers that host it. Yet for some reason the domain has not been seized by authorities, but like the FBI did it with a Nintendo Switch ROM Site ?.

If you are wondering why I am asking is because of a ROM site concept I have been thinking for the past 9 months (image redirect to my rentry page)

By the way, you don't have to mention such service in public, you can always send me a private message!

Plex has confirmed that it will require a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass for remote streaming on its TV apps. The change is going into effect for the Roku app first, followed by all other TV apps and third-party clients in 2026.

Earlier this year, Plex increased its pricing for Plex Pass and stopped supporting all options for free remote streaming in the Plex apps, such as adding a custom server connection in the app settings. The company said at the time, "The reality is that we need more resources to continue putting forth the best personal media experience, and as a result, we will no longer offer remote playback as a free feature." That's also when Plex introduced the Remote Watch Pass as a less expensive way to enable remote streaming again.

Plex is now rolling out the remote watch changes to its Roku TV app. If you have Plex Pass, or the owner of the server you're streaming from has Plex Pass, you don't need to do anything. Otherwise, if you are streaming on a different network from the server's home network, you need Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass.

Someone cracked/rip (don't know the right term) CS:GO but only the 2020 version - https://hackvshack.net/threads/cs-go-2020-legacy-download-2023.2995

To fix Account Error, go to "csgo" folder, found "steam.inf", or just "steam" file, change first line "ClientVersion" to "2000258", and all will work
