I agree, but on one condition: all that "mandatory" local content should be created with local Australian equipment. Australian cameras, Australian cars, Australian software...

[-] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 months ago

Maybe a few more conditions, mainly towards scripted content, so we don’t just end up with a glut of locally produced game shows, reality TV and panel shows.

We are more than capable of producing world-class content, even if my sleep-deprived parent brain can only think of The Wiggles and Blue right now..

Elly & jools, round the twist, ship to shore, girl from tomorrow, damnation of Harvey mchugh, stingers, fire, theres a reason why i'm going mostly 90's when we had content laws in place...

[-] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

I will admit that I don’t know of about half of those shows, but: Round the Twist!!! Thanks for unlocking that memory 😁

Might as well add Lift-Off, The Ferals and Feral TV, along with Blinky Bill. Clearly we were spoilt for choice in the ‘90s..

As an aside, it does feel like the local music industry has gone much the same way?

I think the JJJ hottest australian kinda dispelled that, lotta recent stuff in there - some of which I didn't realise was aussie, like Shooting Stars.

[-] Taleya@aussie.zone 7 points 3 months ago

And no reality tv

[-] FireWire400@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Australian software and cameras shouldn't be that hard with Blackmagic Design being from Straya

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 months ago

I somehow didn't know blackmagic was from there, explains why they're so cool I guess. And you guys also have Rode for the sound.

[-] timmytbt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

When possible ….

I wouldn’t want to limit Australian content production because the production company is using some cheap Chinese cameras for example.

This works really well in Canada. We call it "CanCon", and there is a LOT of great Canadian artists and talent that would otherwise languish if we didn't stick up for the local scene

What is the best Australian TV made in the last 20 years?

[-] FireWire400@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

I'd say Mr. Inbetween, although I know literally nothing about Aussie TV beyond that show

[-] DavidDoesLemmy@aussie.zone 1 points 3 months ago

Agree, great show!

[-] Nath@aussie.zone 4 points 3 months ago

Bluey. Not even kidding, this is a TV show all about Australia and Australian culture disguised as a kids show. Sample episodes to watch: "Cricket", "Stumpfest", "The Decider". There - that's 20 minutes of TV that you can watch with or without kids and have a great time.

My wife loves the Phryne Fisher murder mysteries. She's read every book multiple times and likes the TV adaptation.

Fisk seems to win all the awards.

IMHO, Australian Survivor is killing it. Better than the US version. Though it's filmed in Fiji, so maybe doesn't count.

4 Corners is always the answer for serious journalism.

[-] lodion@aussie.zone 2 points 3 months ago

Alone Australia is so much better than any other "survival" reality shows. Not even in the same league.

[-] No1@aussie.zone 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I just can't get into Alone since the thought occurred to me that it's just a competition to see who can last the longest before they spiral into depression and/or a mental breakdown. 😟

I just find it too depressing.

[-] DavidDoesLemmy@aussie.zone 2 points 3 months ago

Especially the American one when they ask the winner what they'll spend the winnings on, and they say "my wife's cancer treatment". Like get a functioning healthcare system, then but a Lambo damn it!

[-] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 1 points 3 months ago

How does Alone differ to Survivor? I think I know the basics of survivor from seeing a couple of episodes when it first started. I don't know anything about Alone. Your comment makes it sound more like a documentary but I gather it's still also a competition?

[-] appetizer@lemmy.today 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Each contestant is on their own. They place cameras themselves to record their activities. The goal is to be the last one remaining.

They get to bring a limited amount of equipment and supplies with them, there is no way for them to get anything additional from outside. They need to build their own shelter and find their own food.

They each have a satellite phone they can use to call for rescue or to notify the organisers that they would like to leave. Doing either means they lose.

The winner will be told when they're the last one remaining, they have no way of knowing how many are left at any point otherwise.

That's the show, it's extremely good.

Your description makes the show sound a lot more interesting than the show's advertising does. Thanks.

[-] appetizer@lemmy.today 1 points 3 months ago

No problem. I'm keen to know what you think of it.
