I’m a long time rails dev, and I gotta say seeing DHH as the face of this was enough to send me on my merry way.
Edit: ok, well also seeing mechahitler on the front page.

Yeah... DHH is one of the last people's opinions I'll listen to lol
Hope people who use omarchy are happy, it really feels like an ADHD project he'll burn out on but we'll see. Then again, I've already been using linux for ever, so he has nothing to sell me honestly. A vast majority of devs use VS Code. Why would they switch to vim? Anyone who already has a preferred non-vim editor... why would they use omarchy? They'll hate it and just say linux sucks because it requires a weird vim install.
And plus, his announcement video on stage basically said the whole point of Omarchy is so he can make sure his expensive employees aren't killing his profit margins by wasting precious wealth generation time setting up their laptops to develop rails apps. Don't really care for that being the whole purpose of a distro.
I didn’t watch the video, that last part there is disgustingly on brand for him.
This issue represents all you need to know about omarchy.
There is also this:
DHH proudly advertises that the main branch of their repository is called master instead of main, to own the libs or something.
This is a madeup controversy over something nonsensical. Call your main branch whatever you want. It does not matter.
This is dumb. The switch to main was stupid to begin with and served no actual purpose.
There are much more legitimate reasons to call him out as a fascist.
Remind me, what problem does calling it "Main" solve?
What does switching from the default name 'main' back to master achieve; and why are they advertising this on xitter? On an unrelated note, do you know what a dog whistle is?
It doesn't really matter what they call it, does it? Just like changing the name to "main" didn't achieve anything.
Words have multiple definitions. The definition that git's usage is based on is:
an original movie, recording, or document from which copies can be made. "the master tape" synonyms: original, archetype, prototype
This shouldn't have been "problematic" either way. It's just all virtue signals. We aren't rushing to rename Master Degrees are we?
I think main
actually makes more sense. Talking about archetype, prototypes, "original"... Makes no sense in branch development.
Just call it main
. This will make sense for any kind of development.
The switch was pointless and broke a lot of scripts. It was just dumb, through and through.
is that really the biggest problem of the world right now?
Cunts like DHH are trying to turn Linux into yet another nazibar and you are questioning me on calling it out?
Soooooo it's Arch with a bunch of shit you don't need. I mean that's it? nothing improved? performance tweaks? custom kernel? it's just arch with hyprland and I think a custom menu purely for styling? oh and the hyprland config opens Twitter for you too with a keybind...wow.
custom kernel from a web dev💀
Hey, if gets more people using Linux it's a positive in my books 🤷
sure but it's like saying to someone "here's the Linux Pool! dive in!" and then you show them a kiddie pool that has Arch Logos on it that have been scratched out and it's full of piss. Not a great introduction to Linux imho.
Fuck DHH
Opinion: Having some highly opinionated, highly polished distros is an excellent gateway for people to jump aboard. Not everything will be how you want it, sure. But that’s how things are on Windows & MacOS right now.
Immutable distros also help here, preventing goombas like myself from bricking my OS, getting fed up and going back to MS.
Once you learn the basics with guard rails, you can branch out and fix the issues you really care about.
Exactly. I don't use Omarchy, but I think it is good someone did a polished distro for a specific use case, and some web dev Windows users will surely find it more appealing than a generic distro where they need to figure out a lot of stuff from scratch.
Why would a Windows favor hyprland as their first ever linux compositor over a windows like one like KDE? When a bug happens, who do they complain to? DHH?
Don't promote fascist bullshit: https://drewdevault.com/2025/09/24/2025-09-24-Cloudflare-and-fascists.html.
Omarchy is also backed by Cloudflare.
yet another reason to avoid omarchy
Some stability with money can't hurt, but off course its always a little bit concerning. Omarchy is not the only company helping out with money, and they are all limited in what money they can give. So looks like stays independent. We need to see how this develops over time.
I personally am not against backing up with money, as long as they stay independent.
but what's there to stabilize? It's quite literally Arch Linux with a Hyprland config. The support for it, I imagine, will be dreadful. You can't get support for it from the Arch Forums as they will NOT help you if it's not actual Arch Linux and regardless of the fact this IS actually just Arch with a logo slapped on it the Arch Forums aren't going to touch it.
It's just a sleezy dude marketing his dotfiles.
It's an entire distribution and they do not just rely on the Archlinux servers too. I mean this is what a distribution does after all. The point of a distribution is to package Linux with predefined set of applications and configurations into a full fledged operating system. Archlinux itself requires lot of manual steps and knowledge to make it ready for the end user. That's why there are distributions like Omarchy, CachyOS, SteamOS and EndeavourOS, all with their own spin on Archlinux.
If you don't like it, fine, but its unfair to downplay their work. I personally think second class distributions in the sense of a "spin" or "flavor" are important too. Especially because it makes it easy to get into for newcomers, and it makes it just less work for anyone who knows but is lazy to do all the steps. There is value in these distributions. No one forces you to use them. It's not just "dotfiles", if you look closely, you see bunch of conversion scripts and a personal identity with a focus on a specific style.
I'm running arch with kde on my main pc. Now omarchy on my laptop. Showed it at work and got 1 colleague thats running omarchy now on his laptop and he likes it.
I think its nice to have everything working and not setup hyprland from scratch, just thinker with what is there for beginners.
