Could everybody please just CALM the FUCK down?

I suspect China is ramping up operations around disputed territories, because of the world's attention being focused elsewhere.

I hear that theory a lot(for different situations), but I imagine most governments can multitask.

Yes, but governments are strongly effected by public opinion. Notice how much less you're hearing about Ukraine/Russia right now?

Media tends to be a lot more focused on large events, which can help shift public opinion

Seems like I hear about Russia/Ukraine about the same..sounds like those ATACMS missiles(idk what they are though) were pretty effective and important. It's on most front pages.

And in cases like these, I don't think public opinion is that important? Imagine Japan being like, "yeah, China is doing stuff we disagree with in disputed territory, but people are really focused on Israel/Palestine and Russia/Ukraine... let's just leave China alone out there, public's not paying attention anyway."

People struggle with it, and the media won't cover as many things that are this similar in the same way.

Governments weren't going to do anything about any of it anyway. It's people who cause outcry.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Isn't this an article on the Japanese government "doing something about it"?

[-] Pancito@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

If I read that correctly, then it wasn't the military but the coast guards involved. Doesn't this happen regularly?

There was a Whisky war over an island.

This is how shit should be settled, not whatever the fuck the rest of the world is doing.

[-] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

That's easy to do over an island with nothing on it.

Ah yes, a polite adult conversation between two countries who have a dispute over land requires it to be empty. Couldn't possibility do that when lives are on the line. /s

Welcome to the South China Sea. The chinese are literally building islands to manufacture their claims.

South China sea is a major shipping route.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

HONG KONG, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Chinese and Japanese coast guard ships have faced off in waters around disputed islands in the East China Sea, both countries said on Tuesday.

China said it drove away several Japanese vessels that "illegally" entered territorial waters on Monday around the islands, which it calls Diaoyu, and it urged Japan to stop all "illegal activities" in the area.

Japan controls the islands and calls them the Senkaku.

Japan's coast guard said in a press release it ordered two Chinese coast guard vessels to leave the waters around the islands and manoeuvred its ships to prevent them from approaching Japanese fishing boats.

The uninhabited area has long been a sticking point in ties between the two countries.

The original article contains 122 words, the summary contains 122 words. Saved 0%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
