If I threw all my trash on the side of the road id be there also.
On my days to exercise I'll pick up trash around my block on my cool down walk. If it's 3 miles out I'm likely to not pick it up given I'm typically on a run at that point.

When I was a kid, I used to have a runny nose all the time. By high school, I started carrying a tissue box, trash bag, and hand sanitizer around in my backpack.
I do this always, and even for my spliff ends (we call the cardboard bit a roach here) in a pocket ash tray.
It really bugs me when I find a rather nice smoke spot, lovely nature area, and upon my third or fourth visit there is just rubbish everywhere.
Folks have cleaned the areas, only to find them in such a state in practically no time at all.
I wish people would take more responsibility with their rubbish. It literally takes only one pocket, or a small otherwise unused compartment in my bag. It's ridiculously easy to not litter!!
People just can't be bothered. Especially smokers: in my observations 95% or more smokers drop cig butts right where they stop smoking. And they do it absolutely automatically.
