i doubt his family will read it. Coming from a place that gets snow for about 15 minutes a year, on the top of it's biggest "mountain", death by ice skate is something totally foreign.

i continue to be astounded that ice hockey is still played without safety measures for stuff like this, plus the fact that it's apparently pretty normal for players to start fighting..

it almost feels like people are actively there in the hope that there'll be some violence

When people complain about diving in soccer, I point out that fighting in hockey is just as trashy. Y'all grown men, millionaires. Behave yourselves ffs, what's with this fighting in the middle of the game? What kind of bullshit sport allows that? The defense from fans is that the players sometimes need to let out steam, yeah so do all sports players, you let your steam out on the puck you toddlers.

What safety measure could they do? They’re already covered in protection everywhere you could put it, you can’t put anything on the neck because then you can’t turn it and the strangulation risk gets added. This is just a freak accident like many sports have occasionally. Football players sometimes suffer cardiac arrest when tackled, baseball players get hit in the chest and have the same, or get knocked in the head, sports all have some level of danger

you can’t put anything on the neck

Neck guards exist in hockey to prevent this injury. They’re generally mandatory in minor hockey but become optional in adult leagues.

[-] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

There are neck guards, which most players don't wear. Much of the protective equipment is by choice, and leagues need to remove the choice

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago

...they're clearly not wearing neck guards because if they did they wouldn't get their throats sliced open

[-] JJROKCZ@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago

And I explained in my comment why neck guards don’t really work

Maybe carbon fiber chain mail would work?

A few hundred years from now, we'll look back at a bunch of sports and realize how barbaric they were.

Or discover that breathing near recently emptied plastic bottles has been giving us an invisible cancer that looks like natural causes. We tred blind through this world.
