Are the only payment options PayPal and BTC? I feel like people will want something more private

On the sidebar they mention these three providers

  • newsgroupdirect.com
  • newsdemon.com
  • frugalusenet.com

Does anyone have recommendations between the services? Newsgroupdirect has one monthly plan including "Supernews Access" and "ViperNews Access"... does that provide much of an advantage over the annual plan without those two options? Is the service from the three different providers roughly the same? I'm not sure how to compare these.

I'm a big fan of frugal. Supernews is a giganews server but cheaper, they were purchased over a decade ago. Giganews was recently purchased by a company in didn't recognize, they used to be king until automated dmca. Who knows, now that it's sold maybe the dmca automation has stopped.

Thank you for the feedback, and mentioning the dmca issues, I wouldn’t have known to look about that with usenet.

Maybe a stupid question, do you need to use a vpn when downloading from drunkenslug? Or is it secure to download without one?

They have an SSL connection option, which I've personally been using for about a year now with no VPN. I believe most indexers don't like VPNs, but I could be wrong

[-] coughrelief@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

How do I use the SSL connection?

[-] Majoof@aussie.zone 1 points 11 months ago

Use the ssl port

[-] chandz05@lemmy.world 0 points 11 months ago

yes like the other guy said, use the SSL port provided to you by the indexer. Usually 553 or something similar

It seems you can pay with amazon UK gift cards

Did you know that you can buy Amazon gift cards for cash, and be much more anonymous than if you paid by card? ;)
