haha I was wondering the same. The sign is very robust and aggressive, so I wondered if there were earlier versions people still ignored.

Cool of them to provide a sign that gives you a tiny rebellion high. The city must really value civil disobedience.

It's not about the 1-2 meters you don't have to walk, it's about the sharp turn. That wears your soles down and slows you. Can't have that. If they'd adapted and created banked corners, people would follow their path for sure.
