We're like a bunch of ignorant children.

We set fire to the living room because we did something stupid. Now we're in the kitchen and won't tell our parents about the fire and even try to distract them from going into the living room to avoid dealing with the problem. We'll ignore it as long as possible.

We won't realize how big of a problem it is until the whole house burns down.

to be clear, our parents set fire to the living room, and are the ones trying to distract the children from the problem.

Adults aren't the authority here, they are the problem. the youth of the the world overwhelmingly want to address this issue.

Agreed ... I was just generalizing but your interpretation sounds more apt than mine.

"GOOD GOD WHAT'S GOING ON IN THERE?!"

"Aurora Borealis."

"Seymour! The house is on fire!"

"No, mother, that's just the northern lights."

Lol ..... that's how I will face the end too .... just laughing at how idiotically stupid we all were to let this happen.

"Don't need to do anything right now, cause great future technology will save us all."

Alternatively: "I'll be long dead by the time climate change gets real bad."

Humans man, who can understand them?

I had to correct someone that got a bunch of upvotes about this the other day.

These increases are permanent. They're not going to average out at +2 C then peter back down.

Ahh, my 50 kilos of annual Christmas crap from the other side of the earth is ordered, and on the way. Hey maybe we could infuse our blood with olive oil to keep us from boiling alive til next season?

[-] spidermanchild@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

Might need to use an oil with a lower smoke point than olive.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
