Microsoft to kill off third-party printer drivers in Windows
(www.theregister.com)
Normally, I hate anything that takes power away from users and developers, but I’m actually tentatively optimistic about this change. Third party printer drivers are the bane of my existence… they’re so finicky, temperamental, lacking standardized UI, and in recent years I’ve started seeing them bundled with advertisements and locking in 1st party ink replacements. I feel like this standardization, despite or maybe because it takes power away from printer manufacturers, will actually be a pro-consumer move.
