In May, Israel dropped leaflets on Jabaliya refugee camp, northern Gaza, demanding that its residents leave. Iyad remained at home with his mother, who had Alzheimer’s disease. “When the [Israeli] army entered the house, they asked me why I did not leave,” he said. “I told them that I was with my sick mother and we could not go anywhere.” Iyad was shot and brought to #SdeTeiman. When Iyad was eventually released, he learned that his mother had been left to die.

As of July 29, 2024, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 111 journalists and media workers were among the more than 39,000 killed since the war began, making it the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.
