Fighting in the Middle East in the past has led to tensions in France, which is estimated to have the world’s third-largest Jewish population after Israel and the U.S., and the largest Muslim population in Western Europe.

The Louvre museum and the Palace of Versailles were evacuated and closed on Saturday after receiving attack threats. France is on its highest security alert after a teacher was stabbed on Friday.

Two of Paris' biggest and most famous tourist attractions were cleared and closed on Saturday in response to attack threats.

Around 15,000 visitors were requested to leave the Louvre in central Paris after the museum "received a written message stating that there was a risk to the museum and its visitors," a museum spokeswoman told French news agency AFP.

She didn't initially elaborate on the precise nature of the threat but French broadcaster BFMTV cited police sources who said the museum had received "bomb threats."

France will mobilize up to 7,000 soldiers to increase security around the country after a teacher was fatally stabbed and three other people wounded in a school attack by a former student suspected of Islamic radicalization, the president’s office said Saturday.

“We have concerns that there may be additional casualties in that area as well,” a Taliban official said. “Our teams are currently en route to provide assistance to those affected regions.”

Saturday’s 6.3-magnitude quake – followed by eight strong aftershocks – jolted hard-to-reach areas near Herat, toppling rural homes and sending panicked city dwellers into the streets.
