The translucent plastic models crack, specially at the hinges. The buttons poke through the thin rubber membrane and damage the domes below, irreversibly (the new models changed the design of the post to perhaps alleviate the issue, but it's too soon to tell). The charging IC gets unreasonably hot, and while the cases where it fully damaged the unit are not abundant, it's really shocking how hot it gets and I doubt it will last long.

Ah I have the newer model and haven't had issues. Doesn't seem to get hot. Been playing GBA mostly but Dreamcast and Portmaster (stardew valley and balatro) as well. Wonder if yours had a defect or if the newer model just sorts those issues. I'm on Big Banana MUOS at the moment.

I think you misunderstood what I mean by getting hot. I don't mean you'll feel the device itself getting hot and therefore be bothered. I mean the internal chip that handles charging gets so hot it can fry itself and harm it's own longevity.

Yeah I hear you, do you use an oldschool charger rather than a modern high wattage one? Mine got hot with one charger but I swapped to a lower wattage one. It definitely doesn't perform a proper USB C handshake.
