I almost never look at the app store but I popped in today in the wake of the TikTok ban and was shocked to see this.
Pixelfed doesn't have any sort of "communities" or other way to curate content (not even hashtags) so you're just going to see whatever people are posting.
As another commentor mentioned, you can join a specific instance intended for a specific type of post, but there's nothing stopping someone from joining there and posting selfies other than good will.
