I feel like a version of this guide gets reposted weekly, but it's always out of date.

You can use proton in an email client, but you have to install their bridge service first. This is the only way I use it personally
Yeah, that's the reason I never fully used their mail. The bridge is a paid-only feature, and they don't accept Monero for some reason, only Bitcoin.
