I'm prepared to be downvoted to oblivion over this but... I don't think it's a pile of dead bodies and here's a bunch of reasons why.

I feel I need a disclaimer like: I'm not an idiot, I have grave concerns for the inmates and CECOT and I'm certain that many have already perished due to violence between inmates or malnutrition or even violence from guards, however... I just don't think this is a pile of dead bodies.

  • It's never aliens - Sensational blurry images are never what people think they are. You know, the face on mars, et cetera.

  • There are so many more likely things - It could be a pile of chairs, or uniforms, or boxes, or a tarpaulin.

  • They wouldn't make a pile of bodies for us to see - This thing is a cash cow for Bukele. They will be doing their best not to fuck it up. Any idiot would know that if you make a big pile of dead bodies oozing blood outside it will show up on some pesky satellite images.

  • They wouldn't make a pile of bodies outside in the sun - A dead body is a logistically challenging thing to deal with. A pile of dead bodies even more so. Leaving them in the sun even just for several hours would make the whole thing so much worse. The decomp gasses in the digestive tract would make all the dead bodies shit themselves.

  • Industrialised Killing Takes a Toll - Admittedly I don't know a lot about this but the nazis learned killing too many people in a repetitive waymakes a soldier "undisciplined" or unmanageable. I don't want to go into detail but they set up a system where the same soldier never saw the same person alive and then dead. If they were systematically killing inmates this wouldn't be the system.

Occam's Razor: what's the simplest explanation for a red stain outdoors? Rust. But I hope someone makes sure it's not something worse.

[-] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 11 months ago

If it's blood, it's red for the same reason, though

[-] Crazyslinkz@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Unsure why the downvote, I think you are technically right. Oxidation makes blood and rust red.

[-] GiuseppeAndTheYeti@midwest.social -3 points 11 months ago

Because blood is red regardless of oxidation.

[-] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Human blood is.

Cephalopod blood is blue from the copper-rich hemocyanin instead of hemoglobin, which helps them endure the incredible cold of the abyss.

Also, the Prasinohaema skinks of the island of New Guinea are green-blooded from the high concentrations of biliverdin, a toxic green bile pigment that outshines their hemoglobins' iron. 🤓

[-] secretlyaddictedtolinux@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Sure is a lot of fucking rust then.

Or Occam's Razor: a big splotch of red outside a prison building in a prison complex that's abusing inmates and making people disappear is from the people who disappeared.

[-] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Yep, Occam's razor says that it is a pile of wood or debris and that TikTok sleuths no better than Reddit sleuths.

[-] WetBeardHairs@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

I think it is a pile of dead bodies, but I'm not convinced it is a systemic mass slaughter. I think it was a cellblock riot that was put down. I watched the propaganda video where Bukele was introduced to CECOT and it had plenty of lethal weaponry on site. They spoke deliberately and clearly about how the prisoners would be treated with lethal force if necessary and I believe them. If it were a mass extermination, they would have built facilities to do that. It's well known that the Nazi deathcamps were built to psychologically insulate the guards from the terror they were inflicting - and CECOT is clearly well built based on the designs of other prisons. The designers would have definitely taken notes from the deathcamps if that were their intention.

[-] michaelmrose@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

The Nazis also ran work camps which ultimately did mass extermination at a slower simply by virtue of workload and food input. High and low temps also work as well as Poor health and sanitation.

Easy enough to construct a circumstance where every inmate dies in one to ten years and cheaper the boot.

[-] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 11 months ago

You make a good point. I hadn't considered a riot.

We know that conditions there are terrible and that lethal force would be used with little provocation, so having a dozen or so dead in a riot is a likely eventuality.

That said, I still don't think it's a pile of dead bodies. Strong claims require strong evidence. A healthy level of skepticism requires better evidence than a pixelated brown and red smudge.

[-] secretlyaddictedtolinux@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I think this logic ("evil people wouldn't possibly be this open and sloppy with their evil when there's more money to be had") overestimates evil people.

A red splotch visible from satalite outside of a prison that's abusing people where people disappear may be from dead people.

[-] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 11 months ago

Yeah it "may" be from dead people, but my whole point is... it's much more likely to be something far more boring.

Also, I don't think you need to be very smart to not make a pile of dead bodies in the sun in view from the air.

[-] secretlyaddictedtolinux@lemmy.world -2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

To me that looks more like body fluids and excrement and debris flowing from a slaughterhouse.

I just don't see why it's more likely to be something boring. That's also a technical misapplication of statisitcal probability which only can be applied to things which occur repeatedly. Either the prison that has beds in a nearly identical configuration to Auschwitz also has a killing area or it doesn't.

However, given the context, it looks like a killing area. That's why no one is returning that guy, he was likely brought to the killing floor so he couldn't speak out, he was too high profile and they couldn't let him talk about what he saw. Hopefully I'm wrong and they bring the guy back and I can apologize to you for my hubris. I want that outcome.

[-] Infinite@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 months ago

Well, they did just establish proof of life yesterday, so he's probably not in that photo.

Even a toddler would figure out to make orderly stacks of bodies, not just a heap. That's a terrifying toddler, BTW.

[-] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I actually looked this up in various mapping apps. In Google Maps it’s super hard to tell (what they show in the videos). In Apple Maps the place is super clean. As an aside, Apple Map’s imagery is typically clearer and sharper. I honestly don’t see bodily fluids or bodies. Looks like 3 separate stacks of wood to form a triangle to me.

[-] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 months ago

Garcia met with that senator a few hours ago.

Case in point really. Well done.

[-] secretlyaddictedtolinux@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

This prooves nothing!!!!

[-] JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I think with respect to the bodies, you should read up about Noble, Georgia, USA.

Dead bodies are ABSOLUTELY dealt with in very stupid ways because they are a pain to deal with, heavy, and people doing their jobs aren't thinking "what will this look like when it is found or on sattelite imagery". They throw a few bodies on a pile to deal with later, then a few more because they are too busy or the crematorium is broken, or their digger is broken, and then it gets out of hand and it becomes way too big of a job for the people who's job it is.

They are not in the middle of a city having to worry about people stumbling on it.

[-] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 1 points 11 months ago

The only good evidence against it I think is that, according to the article, these satellite images are from March 2024. But, it makes way more sense financially for these El Salvadorian prisons to have their "showroom" of prisoners that is too many for someone from a distance to tally, and meanwhile, cull the overflow so that taking US prisoners is still profitable.

There's a reason we don't hold them ourselves: it costs money. And the only reasons El Salvador would keep them alive is because of a justice system defending their rights, or 3rd parties auditing them for humane conditions. Neither of which are in place for these prisoners afaik.

Sure, maybe these splotches are nothing, but also, I'm fully convinced all the ingredients for a holocaust are there, and if it's ever going to go that far, I'd honestly be surprised if it hasn't already.

[-] WalnutLum@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

That area is also covered in red clay and dirt, the odds that its reddish earth wash is pretty high.

[-] Mirshe@lemmy.world -1 points 11 months ago

There's a reason El Salvador is outsourcing and staffing this place with foreign soldiers. Makes it easier to rotate people in and out, makes it easier to keep things hush in-country.
