Got tired with it. Fired up ytdlp( it was complex for me. So I used an android app called ytdlnis) and downloaded some music. I can't do it in one day so still downloading.

Just remember to pay forward. Go to local music shows, buy merch from the bands you like

I just canceled Tidal and set up a Navidrome server, and I've probably spent more on bandcamp and such lately than 2 years of that subscription.

So I can't say I saved anything cost-wise, but having more control over my library is absolutely worth it. Realistically a single direct album purchase goes much further than streaming the same album anyway.

I hate how Navidrome won’t just take a folder as an album and forces you to get all the data right or else

[-] nfreak@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah it's a bit annoying, I wish it could just edit metadata directly instead of having to go through something like beets or picard

[-] ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Sends me back to Jellyfin every time

MP3 metadata management has always been a pain in the ass. I can suggest Picard and Beets as useful tools, but there will always be some effort required to maintain properly

And dont feel bad for random rights holders of dead musicians or musicians who are already filthy rich. If your music taste is limited to taylor swift and some up and coming indie artist make sure the whole budget goes to that up and coming artist...

[-] nfms@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

Exactly my thoughts. Bandcamp is my goto for independent artists and labels.

[-] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 3 weeks ago

I've ended up with a pretty decent vinyl collection doing this. A lot of artists sell record releases on their merch store.

[-] nfreak@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago

I haven't added much to my record shelf over the past few years, but I did the same while shifting to my own hosted library and buying what I can to support

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 10 points 3 weeks ago

Just give them cash money if you want to support. Merch is just trash generating activity

I know it's ownership status is murky at present, but I still mark BandCamp Fridays in my calendar. Being sure to download anything I buy straight onto the NAS
