I don't get why people complain about windows when there's CLEARLY an alternative.
It doesn't fit everyone's use case.
Perfect is the enemy of good. It fits most people's use case.
As a Linux enjoyer, I agree with you but try not to sound so negative, it's off putting to normal folks.
The rabid amount of Linux fanboyism on Lemmy is quite off putting in general. Any conversation about Microsoft gets brigaded with “Just use Linux!” even if the conversation has nothing to do with it. It makes it a pain to have any decent discourse about things.
Think people who got on lemmy originally lean techy (and thus more likely to use linux and be passionate about it), and people who joined after the IPO thing have more diverse reasons for abandoning reddit.
Lemmy pretty much converted me from Windows to Linux within a year of API-gate.
Well yeah, people that are seeking out an open decentralized platform are more likely to not be fans of a closed centralized operating system.
It's just that naturally on a libre Fediverse platform, people are gonna have higher tech literacy than the average populus.
Linux is enough for me personally, but some ppl use software like Photoshop so it's impossible unless they use winapps or something

To a lot of people it's difficult. Vendor lock-in, support, cartels (the old kind) and familiarity are very important factors in choosing what you're going to use to compute things.
We should embrace the new ones and build things that they are going to use.
Virtual reality on my valve index is basically unplayable on Linux currently due to driver issues :(
Yeah same for me with my rift cv1 the current driver altough better than before is still pretty bad in comparison to windows like 50fps at best and with other drivers it gets 28 fps.
What Linux are you using? I wanted to do the switch soon to either zorin or buzzite, but I would also like to keep using my valve index. Reading this here makes me reluctant to complete the switch.
I prefer a user-friendly interface, plus I regularly use VR with my Quest, which Linux does not like
There are legitimate reasons not to use Linux, but the user interface is not one of them, Linux can be way friendlier UI-wise than windows, see Desktops like cinnamon.
Yeah, linux can be almost anything you want it to be. It'll run faster and look and feel just the same as windows, if not better. The only bad thing, and I say this as someone who's still on windows and will switch soon^tm^, is that there's a lot of work that comes with that.
A friend of mine who's all about linux is always fixing something about his installation. Though from what I know, he's using Arch, which apparently is less stable/needs more work to get going (something about bleeding edge).
Only reason why I haven't changed yet is because of VR and adobe programs. As soon as VR is a bit more seamless and I get replacements for adobe I'm off of windows.
if you want to be super cursed I've seen people replicate several of the windows UIs with desktop environment themes
For sure, not hard to do, and even part of the fun (ricing).
I think VR might actually be a reason to still use windows unless something changed in the last two years

The only issue I have with my Index is that linux somehow prioritizes it over my main monitor when booting so i have to plug it in after booting and then all works fine.
Index probably works fine but I don't know about non valve headsets
WiVRn from quest app store, wivrn desktop app. I also needed xrizer nightly for secondary gun mode to work in half life alyx. Can't guarantee much else though since I only really play beat saber.
I'll use what I want, when I want, how I want, where I want.
Who are you to demand otherwise? People like you are the reason other see Linux people as hostile neck beards.
They also tell people to use it if there's something wrong with their license.
