It saddens me to hear this, however Mamdani has nothing to do with Cuba, Venezuela, or Israel (other than divestment initiatives, which other DSA representatives have supported for the most part). He is running for NYC mayor not the "Department of War". Politicians are not thought leaders in the US, they are a tool to be used for legislation. If these are the words he needs to say to bring material change to the people of NYC, its unfortunate but may be worth it. Him speaking like a maoist third worldist isn't going to change much.
Real change in the US will not come from a politician, it will come from the people.
this takes a myopic view IMO, rhetoric like this absolutely does damage class consciousness in the US. just the other day on hexbear, a bunch of active DSA-left folk were saying their primary task right now is tearing down decades of anti-communist programming with the American proletariat - if that's true, having the two most popular faces of American (ostensible) socialism saying shit like "Israel has the right to defend itself from the horrific Hamas" (Bernie) and "Cuba and Venezuela are brutal dictatorships" (Zohran) points them in the absolute wrong direction. It creates a public perception that socialism = capitalism with all the same chauvinism and global exploitation, but with the balm of economic reforms internally ameliorating its most obvious contradictions and harms. it worsens what is and has been arguably the central contradiction of socialist organizing in the imperial core (the bribes of imperialism kneecapping these movements).
Legislation that will follow ideology lines. That's why the NYPD and the IDF are so close. And Mamdani is now showing that he has no problem denouncing actual left wing movements before even getting into any position of power. He is already showing that he can be compromised on even the smallest things.
Yup. If he is saying this now it's only a matter of time until he starts to justify interventions, sanctions and bombings, sides with cops over protesters, and both-sides the Palestinian genocide.
